Subclass Paladin Oath of Devotion
The Oath of Devotion is the archetypal Paladin subclass — the lawful good holy warrior. Sacred Weapon at Level 3 uses Channel Oath to add Charisma modifier to attack rolls with a chosen weapon and cause it to emit bright light. The Oath of Devotion Spells provide protective and smiting options. Aura of Devotion at Level 7 makes you and nearby allies immune to the Charmed condition.
| LEVEL | FEATURE |
|---|---|
| 3 | Oath of Devotion Spells, Sacred Weapon |
| 7 | Aura of Devotion |
Oath of Devotion Spells The following spells are always prepared and don't count against your prepared spell limit.
Level 3: Protection from Evil and Good, Shield of Faith
Level 5: Aid, Zone of Truth
Level 7: Beacon of Hope, Dispel Magic
Level 9: Freedom of Movement, Guardian of Faith
Sacred Weapon As a Bonus Action, you can expend one use of your Channel Oath to imbue one Simple or Martial weapon that you are holding with positive energy. For 1 minute, you add your Charisma modifier to attack rolls you make with that weapon (with a minimum bonus of +1). The weapon also emits Bright Light in a 20-foot radius and Dim Light 20 feet beyond that. If the weapon is not already magical, it becomes magical for the duration.
You can end this effect early as a Bonus Action. The effect ends if you sheathe the weapon.
Aura of Devotion You and allies within your Aura are immune to the Charmed condition.
The Oath of Devotion is the straightforward offense and protection Paladin. Sacred Weapon at Level 3 adds Charisma modifier to attack rolls — at 20 Charisma, that's +5 on top of the existing Strength/Dex + Proficiency bonus. At Level 3, this gives the Devotion Paladin strong melee accuracy before any Aura of Protection synergy kicks in.
Since Sacred Weapon uses a Channel Oath use (Short Rest recharge), you can activate it every Short Rest period. Combined with Paladin's Smite, the attack accuracy from Sacred Weapon ensures Smite spells land consistently.
Aura of Devotion at Level 7 provides blanket Charmed immunity. Charmed is one of the most debilitating conditions (prevents attacking the Charmer, can't benefit from Aura of Courage when Charmed by the enemy). Immunity in a 10-foot radius means the Devotion Paladin serves as a safe anchor point against mass-charm effects like Dominate Person AOE variants.
The Oath Spells cover utility and protection: Shield of Faith (+2 AC Concentration), Aid (increases HP maximum for three creatures), Beacon of Hope (grants Advantage on Wisdom saves + death saves), and Freedom of Movement (immunity to difficult terrain and slowing effects). These provide flexible battlefield support without relying on nova burst damage.
