Dragon Shape lets you transform into a Medium dragon using a Wild Shape use, retaining your statistics and senses. Improved Dragon Shape at Level 6 makes your attacks magical and increases your AC by 1 while transformed. Draconic Magic at Level 10 allows you to cast prepared Druid spells while in Dragon Shape and increases your AC by 2.

Playstyle Notes

The Circle of Dragons is the dragon-form melee Druid subclass. Dragon Shape replaces the standard beast transformation with a fixed dragon form — you retain your own statistics and senses, which means your casting modifier, proficiency bonus, and ability scores all stay the same. This is the key difference from base Wild Shape: a Moon Druid in bear form uses the bear's stats, but a Dragon Druid in Dragon Shape uses their own Druid stats.

Draconic Lore's Expertise in History is a minor utility boost, but the real draw is the magical damage qualifier at Level 6 — Improved Dragon Shape makes all attacks bypass nonmagical resistance, which applies to many dungeon encounters. The +1 AC in dragon form improves durability in melee.

Draconic Magic at Level 10 is the defining upgrade: you can now cast spells while in Dragon Shape. Standard Wild Shape prevents spellcasting, which means Druids normally choose between casting and transforming. Draconic Magic removes that tradeoff — you can stay in Dragon Shape for the AC and form bonuses while maintaining full spell access. Pair with Primal Order: Warden for Medium Armor base AC, then add the Level 10 +2 AC bonus in dragon form.
