What Is the Architect of Ruin?

The Architect of Ruin is an Illrigger subclass that combines seal mechanics with arcane spellcasting — layering Wizard spells on top of Baleful Interdict.

At Level 3, Spellblade grants access to a limited arcane spell list and spell slots, functioning like an Illrigger variant of an Eldritch Knight. At Level 7, Hellish Versatility lets you cast a cantrip in place of an Extra Attack attack, and Axiomatic Seals adds your Charisma modifier to seal damage. At Level 11, Submit burns seals to impose Disadvantage on saves against your spells.

Class Features

Progression Overview

LEVEL FEATURE
3 Spellblade, Spellcasting
7 Hellish Versatility, Axiomatic Seals
11 Submit

Level 3 Features

Spellblade

You gain access to the Wizard spell list. You gain 2 first-level spell slots and can learn spells from this list — expanding as you level.

You're also treated as having Wizard spellcasting ability for certain spell interactions, and you select 2 spells that are always prepared at no cost.

Spellcasting

As an Architect of Ruin, your Intelligence fuels your spellcasting. You prepare and cast spells from the Wizard list, giving you tools to shape the battlefield around your seals.

Spell Slots by Level:

ILLRIGGER LEVEL SLOTS (1st) SLOTS (2nd) SLOTS (3rd)
3 2
4–5 3
6–7 3 2
8–9 4 2
10–11 4 3
12 4 3

Level 7 Features

Hellish Versatility

Once on each of your turns, you can cast one of your Illrigger cantrips in place of one of the attacks granted by your Extra Attack feature.

This blends casting into the Attack action — one weapon attack plus one cantrip per turn without giving up the attack sequence.

Axiomatic Seals

When you burn one or more seals to deal damage to a creature, you can activate this boon (no action required) to add your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1) to each seal's damage roll.

Level 11 Features

Submit

When you cast an Illrigger spell you know, you can burn two seals on an Interdicted creature (no action required) to impose Disadvantage on its saving throw against the spell. Submit is a toggle that requires at least 2 seals available.

Playstyle Summary

The Architect of Ruin is a spell-and-seal hybrid.

Your combat identity:

  1. Baleful Interdict — mark targets; your spells and seals reinforce each other
  2. Spellblade at Level 3 — Wizard spellcasting; always-prepared spells provide reliable options
  3. Hellish Versatility at Level 7 — one weapon attack plus one cantrip per Attack action
  4. Axiomatic Seals — burned seals each deal +Charisma modifier damage
  5. Submit at Level 11 — burn two seals to impose Disadvantage on a save against your spell; pair with your strongest save-or-suck cast
