Beast Master

What Is the Beast Master?

The Beast Master is a Ranger subclass built around an animal companion. Primal Companion at Level 3 lets you conjure a Beast of the Land, Sea, or Sky that fights alongside you. The Beast acts on your turn using a Bonus Action command, freeing your action for attacks. Exceptional Training at Level 7 removes the need to command the Beast for non-attack actions and makes its attacks magical. Bestial Fury at Level 11 allows the Beast to attack twice.

Progression Overview

LEVEL FEATURE
3 Primal Companion
7 Exceptional Training
11 Bestial Fury

Level 3

Primal Companion You magically summon a primal beast, which draws from the magical energy of the Feywild and Shadowfell. The beast is friendly to you and your companions and obeys your commands. Choose its stat block — Beast of the Land, Beast of the Sea, or Beast of the Sky. The beast vanishes if it drops to 0 Hit Points or when you die.

The beast acts on your turn. On your turn, you can command the beast to take an action (no action required by you). If you don't issue a command, the beast takes the Dodge action. Once you have the Extra Attack feature, you can make one weapon attack yourself when you command the beast to take the Attack action.

You can summon the beast once per Long Rest without expending a spell slot, or by expending a spell slot of Level 1 or higher.

Level 7

Exceptional Training The bond with your beast deepens. Your beast companion can now take any action, not just Attack, without requiring a command from you on your turn. The beast's attacks now count as magical for the purpose of overcoming Resistance and Immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.

Level 11

Bestial Fury Your beast companion can make two attacks when it takes the Attack action on its turn.

Playstyle Notes

The Beast Master's core advantage is action economy: your Beast acts without consuming your action. At Level 3, a Bonus Action command lets the Beast attack, while you take the full Attack action — effectively giving you three attack rolls per turn at Level 5 (two from Extra Attack + one Beast attack).

Exceptional Training at Level 7 removes the need to spend a Bonus Action commanding the Beast for non-damaging actions (Dodge, Help, Dash). This frees your Bonus Action for other uses while the Beast independently repositions or provides flanking support.

Beast of the Sky is generally the strongest pick: it can reach flying enemies, attack from range, and reposition freely. Beast of the Land has the highest damage potential with two attacks at Level 11 via Bestial Fury.
