Subclass Rogue Thief

What Is the Thief?

The Thief is the simplest and most action-efficient Rogue subclass — it multiplies Bonus Action options. Fast Hands at Level 3 adds Throw and using a Spell Scroll as Bonus Actions, and enables using items, picking locks, and searching as Bonus Actions (in addition to the normal Cunning Action options). Second-Story Work grants a Climb Speed equal to your Speed. Supreme Sneak at Level 9 provides Advantage on Stealth checks when you move no more than half your Speed and allows taking the Hide action as a Bonus Action.

Progression Overview

LEVEL FEATURE
3 Fast Hands, Second-Story Work
9 Supreme Sneak

Level 3

Fast Hands You can use your Cunning Action to make a Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check, use your thieves' tools to pick a lock or disarm a trap, or take the Use an Object action. Additionally, you can use Throw as a Bonus Action, and you can use a Spell Scroll as a Bonus Action. Using a Spell Scroll this way doesn't change what you're allowed to use it on — the class and spell slot restrictions still apply as normal.

Second-Story Work You gain a Climb Speed equal to your Speed.

Level 9

Supreme Sneak You have Advantage on a Dexterity (Stealth) check if you move no more than half your Speed on the same turn. Additionally, you can take the Hide action as a Bonus Action.

Playstyle Notes

The Thief is the Bonus Action maximizer Rogue subclass. At Level 3, you have the most Bonus Action options of any subclass: Dash, Disengage, Hide (Cunning Action), Throw, Spell Scroll, Use Object, Sleight of Hand checks, and thieves' tools use. Each turn has more decision points than a standard Rogue.

Throw as a Bonus Action is a significant addition. In BG3, throwing enemies off ledges or throwing heavy objects deals significant falling damage — and the Thief can do this as a Bonus Action while taking the full Attack action.

Casting from a Spell Scroll as a Bonus Action lets the Thief stack a scroll's effect on top of a full Attack action or another spell in the same turn. This doesn't grant access to scrolls you couldn't otherwise use — see Spell Scroll restrictions — but it makes any scroll you do qualify for far more efficient to use.

Fast Hands' Use Object covers all throwable items, consumable items, and interactable objects in the environment. In BG3's item-rich environment, this substantially increases the Thief's per-turn output.

Second-Story Work gives full Climb Speed — no difficult terrain penalties when climbing, no Athletics checks, and effective vertical movement at walking speed. This is primarily a traversal advantage in BG3's multi-level dungeons.

Supreme Sneak at Level 9 gives the Thief the best stealth re-entry: Hide as a Bonus Action after each attack (on turns where you use Cunning Action for Dash or Withdraw rather than Hide). Combined with Stealth Advantage on half-Speed movement, the Thief can maintain stealth positioning turn-to-turn more reliably than any other subclass.
