Subclass Wizard Bladesinger

What Is the Bladesinger?

The Bladesinger is a Wizard subclass that combines elven melee martial arts with arcane magic. Training in War and Song at Level 3 grants proficiency with all non-Heavy, non-Two-Handed melee weapons and allows using them as a spellcasting focus. Bladesong lets you activate a magical state that adds Intelligence modifier to AC, Speed, Acrobatics, and concentration saves — scaled by Intelligence. Extra Attack at Level 6 gives a second weapon attack per attack action. Song of Defense at Level 10 lets you expend a spell slot to reduce incoming damage while Bladesong is active.

Progression Overview

LEVEL FEATURE
3 Bladesong, Training in War and Song
6 Extra Attack
10 Song of Defense

Level 3

Training in War and Song You gain proficiency with all Melee Martial weapons that don't have the Two-Handed or Heavy property. You can use a Melee weapon with which you have proficiency as a Spellcasting Focus for your Wizard spells.

Bladesong As a Bonus Action, you invoke an elven magic called the Bladesong, provided you aren't wearing armor or using a Shield. The Bladesong lasts for 1 minute and grants the following benefits:

  • Your Armor Class increases by your Intelligence modifier (minimum +1)
  • Your Speed increases by 10 feet
  • You have Advantage on Acrobatics checks
  • If you make a Concentration save to maintain a spell, add your Intelligence modifier to the roll

The Bladesong ends early if you are Incapacitated or if you make an attack roll with a weapon using two hands.

Uses per Long Rest equal your Intelligence modifier (minimum 1). Uses also restore when you expend Arcane Recovery charges.

Level 6

Extra Attack You can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.

Level 10

Song of Defense You can direct your magic to absorb damage while your Bladesong is active. When you take damage, you can use your Reaction to expend one spell slot and reduce that damage by an amount equal to five times the slot's level.

Playstyle Notes

The Bladesinger is the Intelligence melee-spellcaster Wizard subclass — the only Wizard with Extra Attack. Bladesong's AC bonus (Intelligence modifier) stacks with Mage Armor (13 + Dex) for remarkable unarmored defense: at 20 Intelligence (+5) and 14 Dexterity (+2), Mage Armor + Bladesong = AC 20, matching full plate.

The Concentration bonus is the Bladesinger's strongest non-obvious synergy: Intelligence modifier added to all Concentration saves means the Bladesinger almost never drops Concentration. A Bladesinger with 20 Intelligence and Proficiency bonus (+4) rolls Concentration checks as +9 base (Proficiency + Constitution modifier + Intelligence modifier). High-level Concentration spells (Hold Monster, Hypnotic Pattern) stay up across entire combat encounters.

Extra Attack at Level 6 makes the Bladesinger genuinely competitive in melee: two weapon attacks + a cantrip option (via War Magic from multiclass or natural spellcasting) per turn. Combined with Intelligence-based weapon-as-focus, a Longsword swing and a Fireball can happen from the same full attack action economy.

Song of Defense at Level 10 converts spell slots into damage reduction: a Level 5 slot reduces incoming damage by 25. As a Reaction, this doesn't consume your action — you attack on your turn and absorb damage on theirs.
