Identity

Refrain RoundSong is the Cantor of the Order of the Humming Hem: the one who leads its singing, and teaches its songs to every new voice that joins. He is one of the Attuned, born in the Song Sanctuaries, where the rivers carry choruses downstream and the grasses trill at every footstep, and the Order regard him as something between a teacher and a grandfather.

Refrain is gentle, playful and endlessly patient with beginners. He cannot hold a tune on his own, which is a rare thing among the Attuned, and he says this is the whole point: every song he has ever taught is meant for many voices, so that no single singer has to carry it.

The Rounds

Refrain did not invent the round, but no one in living memory has taught more of them. In a round, each voice begins the same melody a little after the one before, so that the song overlaps itself and never quite ends. Travellers hear his rounds sung across the Song Sanctuaries, begun by one singer and carried on by strangers, sometimes for days. That is why Threadlings call him RoundSong.

His most famous round has no end at all. Refrain began it on the steps of the Order's hall when he was first made Cantor, and it has not stopped since. Somewhere in the Sanctuaries, at every hour, someone is singing it, and when they tire, someone else comes in behind them. No one knows how many voices have carried it. Refrain says that is the one number he never wants to know.

Refrain and the Void

The Order of the Humming Hem are wardens of the Weave's fraying edges, and Refrain takes his singers there too. Where the Void creeps close to the Sanctuaries, the land goes quiet: birdsong thins, the rivers stop carrying their choruses, and the grasses no longer trill underfoot. This is Null's third denial, Never, heard as silence. Nothing lasts, the Obscurists say, and so no song is worth beginning.

Refrain answers with a round. A single voice falls quiet the moment it stops. A round only ends when no one comes in behind, and so far, someone always has. The Order say that wherever his endless round is being sung, the Fraying slows, and Refrain is careful never to claim it is true, in case they stop singing to find out.

Depictions

Refrain wears the robes of the Order, stitched with bars of music along every hem. He carries a songbook with no single part written out in full, only the lines that are meant to be sung together.

Narrative Function

Refrain is a leading voice of the Song Sanctuaries, and a natural ally of the Order of the Humming Hem. He embodies Ever's gift in its most joyful form: the song that lasts because it is passed on.

For contributors, Refrain is the right voice for music, communal song, and audio-driven quests.
