"You cannot keep a light by holding it. You can only keep it by handing it on."
-- Hearth WickWeaver
Hearth WickWeaver is the Lamplighter of Frays End. Every evening at dusk she walks the city with a long taper, and every lantern on every street is lit by her hand, burning on a wick she twisted herself. She was born in LoomLit, on the shore of the Lucent Lakes, into the family who made the wicks for every lantern of the LoomLight Festival, and she is the last of them.
Hearth is warm, dignified, and carries a quiet sorrow she rarely shows. She was not at LoomLit when Bobbin Blench tore the knot from his wrist, and the Void drew its first breath. For the first time in her family's memory, a WickWeaver had missed the festival: she was in Frays End that year, delivering lantern wicks. She has lived in Frays End ever since, keeping the memory of the festival alive, and waiting.
She is patient, and exact. Hearth believes that some things should happen at their proper time, in their proper way, in front of everyone. A ceremony, she says, is only a promise that the whole town keeps together.
A wick is a twist of thread that carries a flame. On its own it is only string, and a flame on its own soon goes out, but together they make a light that lasts all night. The WickWeavers of LoomLit twisted every wick for the festival from three strands, one for each of the FirstSpun, and Hearth still twists hers the same way. She says the third strand is the one that matters most, because it is the one that holds the other two together.
LoomLit sat on the silvered shore of the Lucent Lakes, ancestral home of the Wisps, where the water was so still that every lantern in town was lit twice: once on the shore, and once in the lake. The Hand Binding opened every LoomLight Festival. At the water's edge, before the lanterns were lit, the keeper of the festival held out their hands, wound loosely with the ancient luminous string. The next keeper held out theirs. The string was unwound from one pair of hands and rewound on the other, slowly, in front of the whole town, while the old keeper and the new spoke the old words:
"I have held it for a while."
"I will hold it for a while."
"Ever Onward."
-- Words of the Hand Binding
The last line was spoken by everyone on the shore. Only then were the lanterns lit, each one from the last, all the way around the lake. The WickWeavers lit the first.
Where the luminous string came from, the tellings do not agree, and in the spirit of If they are allowed to differ. The Elders say it was a single thread of weft that Ever let fall from the Shuttle. The Wisps of the Lucent Lakes say it was spun from their own light, and given freely.
The Hand Binding is the oldest known use of the words Ever Onward. They have travelled far from the shore of the Lucent Lakes since. The Travellers call them out before setting off, and Rook RagRavel opens every show in the Canopy of Curiosity with them. Few who say the words today know they began as a promise made over a string of light, though Rook, who knows the origin of every trick he uses, most certainly does.
Hearth carries the Book of Keepers, which the WickWeavers kept for the festival for as long as there was a festival to keep. It records the name of every keeper of the Hand Binding, in the order the string passed between them, generations of Blench hands among them. The last name in it is Bobbin Blench.
Hearth has never crossed it out. Many in Frays End expect her to be angry with him, and some are angry on her behalf. She is not. She will say only that a string can be dropped by one pair of hands, but it was held by a great many, and that the next line of the book has been left blank on purpose.
Of all the lanterns Hearth lights, only one is her own: a single lantern in the window of her house in Frays End, facing the direction of the Lucent Lakes. She lights it last, every night.
On the night that the LoomLight Festival would have been held, many households in Frays End leave their own lanterns burning until morning. Hearth did not ask them to. It began one year without her, and she was, by every account, more moved by it than by anything since LoomLit.
The Elder Kindle is her dearest friend in Frays End, and her opposite: Hearth keeps a light in one place, and Kindle carries hers everywhere. Hearth suspects Kindle's lantern holds one of the last LoomLight flames, and has given up asking.
With the Elder Vigil she shares the long habit of waiting. Her last round of the city ends at the Eternal Loom, and the two of them are often found there late in the evening, saying very little.
The Void was born not from something done, but from something no longer passed on. Hearth knows this better than anyone, because it was her festival that was lost, and the Obscurists know it too. They leave her little notes on her lantern posts, written in a careful, patient hand. Your light went out, the notes say, as every light does. That is Never, and it is the truth of things.
Hearth reads every one, and lights the lantern anyway. Her answer is the one she gives to anyone in Frays End who asks why she keeps going:
"It did not go out. It was put down. Anything put down can be picked up again."
-- Hearth WickWeaver
Hearth is the keeper of the LoomLight Festival's memory, and the living link between LoomLit and Frays End. She can be met early in Act One at Frays End, where her lanterns, her book, and its blank line quietly set up the ending.
She is the natural lead for the finale of the StoryWeaver's journey, when the LoomLight Festival is recreated at Frays End, and the Hand Binding string is passed not to a single keeper, but hand to hand through every community. The blank line in her book is filled not with one name but with all of them, and the words of the Hand Binding are the StoryWeaver's answer to their own doubt at the start of the game: that stories matter because they are handed on.
For contributors, Hearth is the right voice for tradition, ceremony, and celebration, and for any story about keeping a light alive by passing it on. She is also a patron for maintainers and reviewers: those who hold a project for a while, and hand it on.
