History

Status: Active

Besson Family Vineyards was established in 2017 by Denise Besson and James Fahey as a fourth-generation family winery in the Santa Clara Valley. The winery is located on Hecker Pass Road in Gilroy, continuing the family's long agricultural heritage.

The vineyard is home to California's oldest Grenache vines, planted in 1910 and now 113+ years old. These historic vines represent an extremely rare surviving example of pre-Prohibition era plantings in Santa Clara County.

Wines

The winery specializes in wines from their historic Grenache vineyard. The 113-year-old Grenache vines produce distinctive fruit reflecting over a century of terroir adaptation.

Historical Significance

Besson Family Vineyards holds exceptional historical significance as custodian of California's oldest Grenache vines. The 1910 planting means these vines pre-date Prohibition, survived the era when most vineyards were destroyed, and represent extremely rare genetic material from the pre-clonal selection era.
