Paul Smith worked for several Bay Area start-ups in financial services sector. Late 1990s: Paul and wife Robin purchased property in Woodside.
After building house, sought advice from Bob Mullen on what to plant. Mullen advised Pinot Noir. Over several years, planted blocks of French clones under supervision of Woodside Vineyards and later Thomas Fogarty.
Initially fruit used by Woodside Vineyards, later custom crushed at Fogarty. 2006: Under tutelage of Fogarty winemaker Michael Martella, Paul began making wine in garage.
