Santa Cruz Mountains AVA
Owners: Peter and Barbara Woodruff Manager: Size: 9 acres Varietals:Pinot Noir(6 acres),Chardonnay(2+ acres),Gewurztraminer(<1 acre) First Planted: 1978 Age of vines: Approx 30 years Location:Corralitos
The Woodruff Vineyard is located on the very edge of the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, in Corralitos near Watsonville. It is around 5 miles east of Monterey Bay, and is about 2 miles from Windy Oaks. Originally known as the Matteson Vineyard, it was planted around 1978 with a selection of Pinot Noirand Chardonnayclones. The fruit was used by a number of wineries, notably Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyardwho produced a single vineyard Pinot Noir from the early 1980s until 1997.
When the original owner died in 1997 the vineyard passed on to his family and became the Ciardella vineyard. However under the new owners quality dropped and few wineries appear to have released Ciardella designated wines. Around 2001 Peter and Barbara Woodruff purchased the property and set about renovating and restoring the vineyard; it became known as Terra Serena. For 2008 they recruited Paul Romeroas vineyard manager to fine-tune the vineyard and bring it up to a new level. Bradley Brown (of Big Basin) took over for 2009. All of the '08 and '09 Pinot Noirs have won high praise.
