1913: Camillo Colombano established Colombano Winery in Morgan Hill, planting Barbera rootstock and focusing on Italian varietal wines. The winery was founded just before Prohibition, demonstrating the continuing strength of Italian immigrant winemaking in the Santa Clara Valley.
1920-1933: During Prohibition, the winery likely survived through sacramental wine production and home winemaking supplies, following the pattern of other Italian family wineries in the region.
1945: The property passed to the Pedrizzetti family, who renamed it Pedrizzetti Winery.
Colombano Winery represents the first phase of a century-long winery site:
- 1913-1945: Colombano Winery (Camillo Colombano)
- 1945-2006: Pedrizzetti Winery (Pedrizzetti family)
- 2006-present: Morgan Hill Cellars (post-2000, beyond wiki scope)
Colombano Winery is one of the oldest documented bonded winery sites in the Morgan Hill area. The winery's focus on Barbera and Italian varietals reflects the strong Italian heritage of South Valley winemaking, which continues to define the region's wine identity into the 21st century.
The successful transition from Colombano to Pedrizzetti, with the Pedrizzetti family operating for over 60 years, demonstrates the strength of family winery traditions in the Santa Clara Valley.
