History

Roudon-Smith Winery was founded in 1972 by two ex-Amdahl engineers and their wives; Bob and Annamaria Roudon and Jim and June Smith. In 1978 they moved into a 10,000 case facility near Scotts Valley. The facility also served as home to Pelican Ranchwinery, prior to their move to Santa Cruz.

The original owners retired in 2003 and the winery was purchased by Annette and David Hunt, who were joined in 2006 by Al and Diane Drewke. In 2011 the Hunts left the partnership to found Skov, which has since closed.

The estate Annamaria's Vineyardwas sold separately to a long time employee, Cesar Ramirez.

Their tasting room is open on Saturdays from Noon to 4:30

Wines

Some of Roudon-Smith's wines from the early days still hold up well today; 30 years later the 1978 Sonoma Cabernet showed very well. These days most of the wines are made with fruit sourced from outside the AVA, though the winery continues to make Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir was a Gold Medal winner at the 2009 SF Chronicle Wine Competition.
