Sharing palettes

Neil C edited this page Oct 13, 2026 · 1 revision

Share copies a palette as one line of text, while its JSON file also keeps tags and notes.

Share strings

Press Share in Palettes. Send the copied line to someone. They open Import, paste it and press Import. The result is an editable palette.

chroma1:stone,andesite*3,oak_log[axis=y]/Castle

The exact entry form is block_id[property=value,property=value]*weight. Properties and weight are optional. Entries have commas between them. A / after the entries starts the optional name.

  • chroma1: is the format prefix.
  • Minecraft blocks can omit minecraft:. Modded blocks keep their namespace.
  • Properties go inside brackets. Commas inside brackets separate properties.
  • The weight follows the closing bracket when there are properties. It must be a whole number from 1 up. Leaving it out means 1.
  • The first / starts the name. A slash inside a block id is written as %2F.
  • Tags and notes aren't in the string.

Examples:

chroma1:stone,andesite
chroma1:stone*7,andesite*3/Walls
chroma1:oak_log[axis=x]*2,oak_planks/Timber
chroma1:example:stone%2Fpolished*2/Modded stone

The last example represents example:stone/polished. It needs a mod that supplies that block. Import keeps unknown ids so the palette can travel between instances.

JSON files

Your palettes save automatically in <game>/config/chromastudio/palettes/, one JSON file each. Names are based on the palette name, with a numbered suffix when needed. Copy a file to share all its entries, weights, tags and notes. Back up the whole folder to keep your palettes.

Import takes a JSON file's path, or Browse… opens the system file dialog. Paste a share string into the field, rather than the contents of a JSON file. There is no separate JSON export button. Use the palette's saved file.

A file looks like this:

{
  "format": 1,
  "name": "Timber",
  "tags": ["wood", "warm"],
  "notes": "Logs for the frame.",
  "entries": [
    {"block": "minecraft:oak_log", "properties": "axis=x", "weight": 2},
    {"block": "minecraft:oak_planks", "properties": "", "weight": 1}
  ]
}

The format number must be 1. Properties are a string of comma-separated pairs. A missing optional field uses its default. Unknown block ids remain in the palette, but tools that need an installed block leave them out.

These are palette files. Export writes schematics instead.
