What Is the Berserker?

The Berserker is a Barbarian subclass focused on direct damage amplification: Frenzy deals extra damage on every Reckless Attack, Mindless Rage shuts off mind control while Raging, and Retaliation turns any hit taken into a free Reaction counterattack within 5 feet.

Class Features

Progression Overview

LEVEL FEATURE
3 Frenzy
6 Mindless Rage
10 Retaliation

Level 3

Frenzy If you use Reckless Attack while your Rage is active, you deal extra damage to the first target you hit on your turn with a Strength-based attack. To determine the extra damage, roll a number of d6s equal to your Rage Damage bonus, and add them together. The damage has the same type as the weapon or Unarmed Strike used for the attack.

Level 6

Mindless Rage While your Rage is active, you can't be Charmed or Frightened, and if you're Charmed or Frightened when you enter your Rage, the condition ends.

Level 10

Retaliation When you take damage from a creature that is within 5 feet of you, you can take a Reaction to make one melee attack against that creature, using a weapon or an Unarmed Strike.

Playstyle Notes

The Berserker is the damage-focused Barbarian subclass. Frenzy at Level 3 turns every Reckless Attack into a damage spike — the bonus scales with your Rage Damage bonus, so it grows as you level. Combined with Brutal Strike at Level 9 (another bonus from Reckless Attack), a Reckless Attack at higher levels applies Frenzy extra d6s plus 1d10 Brutal Strike damage plus the chosen Brutal Strike effect.

Mindless Rage at Level 6 closes a key Barbarian vulnerability — mind control and fear effects that would end Rage or waste turns. Retaliation at Level 10 is a free melee hit any time something damages you within 5 feet, turning the Barbarian's tendency to absorb hits into consistent output. In a fight where you're tanking multiple attacks, that's a free Reaction attack on nearly every round.
