What Is the Swashbuckler?

The Swashbuckler is a Rogue subclass built around Charisma and solo melee combat. Fancy Footwork at Level 3 prevents Opportunity Attacks from creatures you've attacked on the same turn. Rakish Audacity removes the Sneak Attack's ally adjacency requirement — you deal Sneak Attack whenever you're in one-on-one combat. Panache at Level 9 lets you use Charisma to charm or taunt enemies.

Progression Overview

LEVEL FEATURE
3 Fancy Footwork, Rakish Audacity
9 Panache

Level 3

Fancy Footwork During your turn, if you make a melee attack against a creature, that creature can't make Opportunity Attacks against you for the rest of your turn.

Rakish Audacity You can add your Charisma modifier to your Initiative rolls.

In addition, you don't need Advantage on your attack roll to use Sneak Attack against a creature if you are within 5 feet of it, no other creatures are within 5 feet of you, and you don't have Disadvantage on the attack roll. All the other rules for Sneak Attack still apply to you.

Level 9

Panache As an Action, you can make a Charisma (Persuasion) check contested by a creature's Wisdom (Insight) check. The creature must be able to hear you, and the two of you must share a language.

If you succeed on the check and the creature is hostile to you, it has Disadvantage on attack rolls against targets other than you, and it can't make Opportunity Attacks against targets other than you. This effect lasts for 1 minute, until one of your companions attacks the target or affects it with a spell, or until you and the target are more than 60 feet apart.

If you succeed on the check and the creature isn't hostile to you, it is Charmed by you for 1 minute. While Charmed, it regards you as a friendly acquaintance.

Playstyle Notes

The Swashbuckler is the self-sufficient single-target Rogue subclass and the only one that uses Charisma as a meaningful combat stat. Rakish Audacity removes the hardest Sneak Attack condition: you never need an ally adjacent or Advantage if you're fighting a creature one-on-one. Approach a target, attack, Sneak Attack fires automatically if no other creature is within 5 feet of you.

Fancy Footwork allows you to strike and retreat without Opportunity Attack punishment. Combined with Cunning Action: Disengage, the Swashbuckler can attack in melee, then move away freely without any OA risk — creating a hit-and-run pattern.

Rakish Audacity's Initiative bonus (Charisma modifier) stacks with Dexterity for Initiative. A Swashbuckler with 20 Dexterity and 18 Charisma rolls d20+9 for Initiative — consistently acting before most enemies.

Panache at Level 9 converts Charisma into a battlefield control tool. Against a hostile target, a successful contested Persuasion check forces the enemy to focus on you (Disadvantage on attacks against anyone else) without spending any combat resources. Against non-hostile targets, it applies the Charmed condition — valuable for social encounters or redirecting neutral creatures.
