Clockwork

What Is the Clockwork Sorcery?

The Clockwork Sorcery is a support-oriented Sorcerer subclass. Clockwork Spells at Level 3 provides an always-prepared list of protective and restorative spells. Restore Balance lets you use a Reaction to cancel Advantage or Disadvantage on any d20 roll within 60 feet. Bastion of Law at Level 6 lets you spend Sorcery Points to create a damage-absorbing ward on any creature — a layered shield measured in d8s.

Progression Overview

LEVEL FEATURE
3 Clockwork Spells, Restore Balance
6 Bastion of Law

Level 3

Clockwork Spells When you reach certain Sorcerer levels, you always have the listed spells prepared.

Level 3: Aid, Cure Wounds, Lesser Restoration, Protection from Evil and Good
Level 5: Dispel Magic, Protection from Energy
Level 7: Freedom of Movement
Level 9: Greater Restoration

Restore Balance When a creature you can see within 60 feet of yourself is about to roll a d20 with Advantage or Disadvantage, you can take a Reaction to prevent the roll from being affected by Advantage and Disadvantage.

Uses per Short Rest equal your Charisma modifier (minimum 1).

Level 6

Bastion of Law As a Magic action, you can expend 1 to 5 Sorcery Points to create a magical ward around yourself or another creature you can see within 30 feet of yourself. The ward is represented by a number of d8s equal to the number of Sorcery Points spent to create it. When the warded creature takes damage, it can expend a number of those dice, roll them, and reduce the damage taken by the total rolled on those dice.

Example: spending 5 Sorcery Points creates a 5d8 ward (average 22.5 damage reduction). The ward dice are consumed as damage is taken.

Playstyle Notes

The Clockwork Sorcery is the support and anti-chaos Sorcerer subclass. Restore Balance is an efficient Reaction: canceling Advantage on an enemy's attack roll (e.g., preventing an enemy archer from making an attack roll with Advantage against a Prone ally) doesn't cost a spell slot — only a Reaction and a Restore Balance use. Its Charisma-modifier uses per Short Rest (typically 3–5) means you can deploy it frequently.

Bastion of Law at Level 6 is a variable-cost damage shield. Spending 3 Sorcery Points creates a 3d8 (average 13.5 HP) absorbing ward, comparable to a Shield spell's AC effect spread over multiple hits. Because the ward absorbs damage of any type (no damage type restriction), it's universally applicable to any ally.

The Clockwork Spells list is fully protective: Aid (HP maximum increase), Lesser Restoration (condition removal), Dispel Magic, Freedom of Movement, Greater Restoration. Combined with the Sorcerer's full spellcasting list, the Clockwork Sorcery can fill a hybrid support-offensive role without sacrificing damage potential.

Restore Balance works offensively too: cancel an enemy's Advantage on their saving throw against your spell (e.g., a creature with Advantage on Wisdom saves about to roll against your Hold Person). This converts a likely-success into a normal-probability roll.
