Step-by-step: Tutorial-ISDB-T

What ISDB-T is

ISDB-T is the terrestrial television standard of Japan, Brazil and most of South America. It splits a 6 MHz channel into 13 segments, one of which can carry one-segment mobile TV.

Frequencies and settings

Japan, Brazil and most of South America, Philippines.

Setting Value
Channel width 6, 7 or 8 MHz (8 MHz in the Maldives); 13 segments
Sample rate 6 to 20 Msps
Frequency the 6 MHz raster of Japan and Brazil: use the Scan tab

OnAir takes any frequency you type; the numbers above are the mode's starting point and the range its table describes. In the app the shortcut label is Japan, Brazil.

What OnAir shows

Digital TV and one-segment mobile TV.

Tips and caveats

  • Decodes real transmissions, checked with real Dektec and PlutoSDR captures (release 0.2.5). Channel names in the Japanese character set are not converted yet.
  • Which radio: No: wide TV channels need a radio that samples faster than an RTL-SDR, which reaches about 2.4 Msps. See Supported radios.
  • Try it without a radio: most modes include a built-in synthetic test signal, so you can open the screen and try the controls first.
  • Receiving and the law: Receiving free-to-air broadcasts is legal in most countries. OnAir cannot decode encrypted or scrambled services, and does not try to. See Legal.
