Step-by-step: Tutorial-MAC

What MAC is

D2-MAC and D-MAC were analogue-digital hybrid satellite television systems of the late 1980s and 1990s, with digital sound and data.

Frequencies and settings

D2-MAC and D-MAC satellite TV (FM, 27 MHz; 20 Msps sees most of it).

Setting Value
Start frequency 1200 MHz
Tuning range of the mode table 50 to 6000 MHz
Sample rate asked 20 Msps
Lowest working rate 16 Msps
Channel width 27 MHz

OnAir takes any frequency you type; the numbers above are the mode's starting point and the range its table describes. In the app the shortcut label is D2-MAC, D-MAC satellite.

What OnAir shows

Picture (4:3 / 16:9), channel name, digital sound; EuroCrypt detected, not descrambled.

Tips and caveats

  • Checked with generated signals and impairments; recordings of real signals welcome.
  • Which radio: No: wide TV channels need a radio that samples faster than an RTL-SDR, which reaches about 2.4 Msps. See Supported radios.
  • Try it without a radio: most modes include a built-in synthetic test signal, so you can open the screen and try the controls first.
  • Receiving and the law: Receiving free-to-air broadcasts is legal in most countries. OnAir cannot decode encrypted or scrambled services, and does not try to. See Legal.
