Ledge

Commands, scripts and notes tend to live in separate places: terminals, documentation and project files. Ledge is a notebook application with runnable Markdown: code blocks inside a note run shell commands, Python, SQL and AI prompts directly, and output streams beneath the block.

Radar Assessment

The outcome is a single workspace where documentation and the commands it describes are the same thing. A shell persists for the lifetime of a note, so environment variables and directory changes carry from one block to the next. Blocks can run locally or on a remote server over SSH. The application is free under the Apache-2.0 license, needs no account, and is at version 2.5.0, with apps for macOS, Windows 11 through WSL, Linux, iOS and Android (beta).

Executable notes are an established idea, and Marimo covers the notebook case for Python. Ledge's distinct angle is shell-first, multi-language notes with remote execution. In a Jev comparison of four candidates it ranked last, which is reflected in the outer position.

Ledge sits in Assess. It looks mature and is easy to try, but there is no first-person use and the overlap with existing executable-document tools limits its distinctiveness.
