Vagrant

Developers lose time when each machine is set up slightly differently, so code that works on one fails on another. Vagrant is a command-line tool from HashiCorp for creating and managing virtual machines, so a working environment can be rebuilt from a configuration file and moved between machines.

Reproducible Environments

A Vagrantfile defines a virtual machine and how it is provisioned. Boxes are the packaging format for environments, either built by the team or taken from a public catalog. The vagrant up command creates and configures the machine. Synced folders share files between host and guest, and networking forwards traffic between them.

Providers and Extension

Provider plugins let Vagrant manage other machine types. Plugins and triggers add behavior around Vagrant operations. Vagrant Share exposes a running environment to others, and the HCP Vagrant Registry is a hosted source of boxes. The documentation compares Vagrant with command-line tools, Docker and Terraform.

Where It Fits

Disposable virtual machines are also a way to isolate AI coding agents, which links Vagrant to other sandboxing blips on this radar. The Vagrant documentation does not describe agent use; that link is an observation of this wiki.

Radar Assessment

Vagrant is placed in Assess at the center position. It is a long-established tool, with the GitHub repository created in 2010 and about 27,000 stars and 757 open issues when checked. The repository license is not a standard identified one, so none is stated here. Maturity and reputation describe a technology worth exploring, and there is no first-person use.
