What is saved where

Documentation home

Tagcast runs on your computer. Changes you approve can be saved to your iBroadcast account and appear in other iBroadcast apps after they refresh. Other data stays in Tagcast or in one browser profile. Tagcast does not edit existing local MP3, FLAC or other music files. Since 1.1.0, explicit album downloads can create separate local audio copies.

Storage and synchronisation

Data or action Where it is stored What to expect
Album/track metadata, artist credits and lyrics iBroadcast, after the applicable review and save. Read the result: sending a request is not the same as confirming it. Lyrics saves require Premium.
Album covers and artist images iBroadcast, after a separate image comparison and save. Artist images affect that artist throughout iBroadcast. Artwork Undo needs a previous image.
Stars, track hearts and track thumbs-down iBroadcast ratings. Track heart = rating 5; thumbs-down = 1; clearing = 0. Album/artist stars are independent of their local hearts.
Album and album-artist hearts Account-specific files in the Tagcast settings folder on this computer. Shared by browsers using that same folder, but not automatically copied to another computer or shown as hearts in other iBroadcast apps.
Tags and playlists/folders iBroadcast, after their explicit reviewed actions. Deleting a label, playlist or folder is different from moving music to trash. Tagcast provides no Undo for these actions.
Tracks moved to trash iBroadcast's trash. They leave the active library. Restore music in iBroadcast itself; Tagcast cannot restore or permanently delete it.
Ordinary play queue and playback position The current Tagcast page/window. Reloading or restarting clears them. Save as playlist… preserves a track list, not the playback position. Optional queue synchronisation is separate.
Change history and artwork Undo information This browser/desktop profile and local address, including its port. The newest 300 iBroadcast entries are retained. Another profile/port has a different history; clearing site data removes it. It is not a complete audit of iBroadcast.
Appearance, sidebar shortcuts, layout and compact-player display preferences This browser/desktop profile. Remembered here, independently of iBroadcast and of other browsers.
Playback/source/update settings, sign-in tokens and library cache Tagcast's settings folder, normally ~/.tagcast/ (.tagcast in your Windows user folder), or TAGCAST_HOME. Shared by clients of that Tagcast instance. Tokens and source keys stay on the server side of the local app.
Explicitly paused playlist imports, Cleanup/duplicate reports and 1001 Albums links/results Account-specific local Tagcast files. Retained across restarts according to each workflow. Resume and any new write still require explicit checks/review.
Ordinary unsaved metadata/lyrics drafts and selected lyrics files Memory in the current page; ordinary playlist-import drafts also use temporary server memory. Do not rely on a reload/restart to preserve them. Explicit Pause import is the playlist-import exception.
Downloaded album audio The chosen folder on the computer running Tagcast; integrity manifests sit beside the music. Creates separate copies without changing existing files or the iBroadcast library. Options persist in the Tagcast settings folder; the selection and progress remain session-local. See Downloads.
Exported metadata or Change history A downloaded file you choose to keep. Read-only records, not a restore feature or a backup of audio/image files.

For operating steps, see favourites and ratings, saving and recovery, playlist import and metadata export.

Privacy and network requests

Destination What Tagcast sends, and when
iBroadcast Approved sign-in requests; library/account reads; audio streaming; explicitly started album downloads; explicit saves. Play reporting is off by default and, if enabled, sends a track ID and timestamp. Queue synchronisation needs extra consent.
Selected metadata/image sources Artist and album search text during automatic editor lookups or explicit Search; image downloads when requested. Some sources need your own key. Disable individual sources or automatic lookup in Settings.
TheAudioDB biographies / album information A visited artist name, or primary album artist and full title, when the corresponding opt-in switch is enabled and no current cached result is available. No library-wide scan.
Unison / LRCLIB display Track title, artist, album and known duration while the expanded Lyrics view is open and online lyrics are enabled. Temporary memory only; no automatic save. Native-only is the default.
LRCLIB editor lookup Track title, performer, album and known duration when you choose Find lyrics on LRCLIB. Ordinary text enters the separate bounded public cache; Use, Review and Save remain explicit. Lyrics-file import does not contact LRCLIB.
GitHub Public update checks, at most daily unless requested manually. No iBroadcast credentials or library data are sent for update checks. Opening project/help links uses your normal browser connection.
Local 1001 Albums comparison The comparison runs on this computer. Reading bundled background text does not contact Wikipedia or 1001 Albums Generator; attribution links are optional external navigation.

Native lyrics text and public provider text have separate bounded local caches. Disconnect forgets the local sign-in and library cache and attempts token revocation; it does not undo saved iBroadcast changes or erase every local report/favourite. Do not share your settings folder, tokens, source keys or an unredacted library export in a public issue.

Limits to know before editing

  • Saves are not transactional. Earlier accepted changes can remain when later requests fail. Use recovery guidance, not repeated clicks on Save.
  • Metadata changes have no automatic Undo. Artwork Undo restores an available previous image; it cannot remove an image where none existed before. Playlist cover changes have no artwork Undo.
  • Album metadata writes require Combine Multi-Disc Album Sets to be off in iBroadcast. See the multi-disc explanation.
  • Tagcast restricts lyrics saves, including lyrics-file import saves, to Premium. Free accounts can read lyrics and use MP3 128 kbps; all other offered streaming choices, including 96 kbps and Original, require Premium. iBroadcast's own account/service limits also apply.
  • ListenBrainz playlist URLs and cross-device queue control have explicit experimental/interoperability caveats in their guides. A mock test is not proof that your device/provider will work.
  • Tagcast does not upload music, restore a metadata-export archive, send Last.fm scrobbles or install updates automatically. Operation-specific size and batch limits stay beside their instructions.

iBroadcast account and service limits

iBroadcast determines storage, bandwidth, track visibility and streaming entitlements. Its announced subscription changes introduce different account limits; plan names alone do not establish a capability. Tagcast uses the account capabilities returned by iBroadcast and cannot remove provider limits or reveal unavailable tracks. Missing music is not automatically evidence that Tagcast removed it. Check iBroadcast's account and Track Dashboard when availability differs. Tagcast itself remains free and open source.

Terms used in the guide

Term Meaning
Native Stored in iBroadcast itself, rather than only in Tagcast.
Album artist / additional album artist Album-level credits used for browsing the album. These are separate from each song's performers.
Track artist / credit A song's primary performer, or an additional named person/band with a role such as Composer.
Disc / set A native album record, or related discs Tagcast displays together. Writes still use each original disc.
Genre / tag A musical classification, or a separate custom iBroadcast label.
Edition / copy A particular upload/release or library track; matching text does not prove identical audio.
Draft / review Unsaved choices, followed by the before/after or ordered list you inspect before confirming a write.
Read-back / confirmation A fresh read used to check whether the requested values actually appear in iBroadcast.
Unconfirmed result A request's intended effect has not been verified. Check the current state before a new review.
