The reeds of The Ink Well grow straight and hollow as quills. They gave the ReedKin their roofs, their boats, their first pens and, some say, their first pipes, and every word ever written in Threadbare can trace its way back to them.

Cut at an angle and dipped in the Well, a hollow reed will carry ink. It was with one of these reeds that the Elder Rune wrote the first story on a pressed leaf, so that writing could at last leave the swamp.
Every InkKeepers apprentice still begins their training at the Well, in silence, cutting their first reed from the same beds the ReedKin once cut. The small reed boats that carry InkKeepers to and from the Well are the descendants of the ReedKin's canal boats.
- The Ink Well - the swamp where they grow
- ReedKin - the reed people who first wrote with them
- InkKeepers - who still cut their first reed here
- Rune - who wrote the first story with one
- The World of Threadbare - the lore, landscape and denizens of Threadbare
