LanternLichen
"Where the lichen glows, the memory holds."
-- A miners' saying of the Memoir Mines
LanternLichen grows along the walls of The Memoir Mines, and glows only where a memory is still whole. Where a memory has begun to fray, the lichen dims. Where a memory has been lost, there is no lichen at all.

LanternLichen grows in soft, scattered clusters of glowing French knots, following the glittering veins of remembered faces down into the dark. It glows a warm, steady gold.
The lanterns of the Mines burn low these days, and many travellers find their way by LanternLichen alone. The Memory Moths keep to the dark stretches where the lichen has gone out, which makes a long, unlit tunnel the one place every sensible traveller avoids.
Some say LanternLichen is a distant cousin of LanternLace, the lost flower of the Lucent Lakes, and that its spores drifted down into the Mines long ago, carried on a memory of the LoomLight Festival.
Telling a story aloud in a tunnel makes the lichen around the teller brighten, a small, local reversal of the kind the Observists have recorded wherever stories are shared. A tunnel full of voices is a tunnel full of light.
- Light and guidance. LanternLichen is a natural light source and path guide in the Memoir Mines.
- Warning. Dark patches warn of Memory Moths.
- Relighting. Telling stories can relight a tunnel to open the way.
