The RemuxForge-Cli-* archives contain the command-line version, described in CLI.
RemuxForge works together with three free tools. Install them once:
| Tool | What RemuxForge uses it for |
|---|---|
| MKVToolNix | Reading, writing and editing MKV files, and turning MP4, AVI and M2TS sources into MKV |
| MediaInfo (the CLI package) | Reading track details, the frame rate mode and the scan type. Split, Automatic sync and Edit alignment do not start without it |
| FFmpeg | Comparing pictures, converting audio, re-encoding video |
On Windows and Linux, RemuxForge downloads FFmpeg by itself the first time it needs it. On macOS, install it with Homebrew. The Docker image already contains all three tools.
# Windows (in a terminal)
winget install MoritzBunkus.MKVToolNix
winget install MediaArea.MediaInfo.CLI
# macOS (Homebrew)
brew install mkvtoolnix media-info ffmpeg-full
# Debian / Ubuntu
sudo apt install mkvtoolnix mediainfo
# Fedora
sudo dnf install mkvtoolnix mediainfo
# Arch
sudo pacman -S mkvtoolnix-cli mediainfoPick the MediaInfo CLI package: it provides the mediainfo program that RemuxForge calls.
- Download
RemuxForge-Desktop-win-x64.msiand open it. - If Windows shows Windows protected your PC, choose More info, then Run anyway. The installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows asks once.
- Follow the installer, then start RemuxForge from the Start menu.
The installer also sets up Microsoft WebView2 when the computer needs it.
- Download
RemuxForge-Web-win-x64.zipand extract it to a folder. - Double-click
RemuxForge.Web.exe. - Open http://localhost:5000 in your browser.
The Desktop app runs on Macs with Apple Silicon (M1 and later). On an Intel Mac, use the WebUI described below.
-
Download
RemuxForge-Desktop-osx-arm64.dmg, open it and drag RemuxForge into Applications. -
Open Terminal and run this command once. It removes the "downloaded from the internet" mark that macOS places on the app:
xattr -cr /Applications/RemuxForge.app
-
Open RemuxForge from Applications.
If macOS still shows a warning, open System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security, scroll down to the message about RemuxForge, choose Open Anyway and confirm with Open. From then on RemuxForge opens like any other app.
The app is distributed without Apple notarization, which is why macOS asks for this confirmation. Repeat step 2 after installing a new version.
-
Download
RemuxForge-Web-osx-arm64.zip(Apple Silicon) orRemuxForge-Web-osx-x64.zip(Intel) and extract it. -
In Terminal, go to the extracted folder and run:
xattr -cr RemuxForge.Web chmod +x RemuxForge.Web ./RemuxForge.Web
-
Open http://localhost:5000 in your browser.
-
Download
RemuxForge-Web-linux-x64.ziporRemuxForge-Web-linux-arm64.zipand extract it. -
In a terminal, from the extracted folder:
chmod +x RemuxForge.Web ./RemuxForge.Web
-
Open http://localhost:5000. From another computer on your network, open
http://<server-address>:5000.
Use a UTF-8 system language setting, so names with accents and other special characters display correctly. Check it with locale; a value such as LANG=en_US.UTF-8 is right.
The WebUI is open to anyone on your network who knows the address. Keep it on a trusted network, or put it behind a reverse proxy with a login when you need access from outside.
docker run -d \
--name remuxforge \
-p 5000:5000 \
-e REMUXFORGE_DATA_DIR=/data \
-v /path/to/config:/data:rw \
-v /path/to/media:/media:rw \
draknodd/remuxforge:latestOpen http://localhost:5000 and pick your files under /media, the folder name they have inside the container. Docker Compose, file ownership and graphics-card acceleration are on the Docker page.
- Open Settings ▸ Tool paths. Every tool shows
[OK]when RemuxForge has found it. For anything marked[NOT FOUND], install the tool or choose its location with the folder button next to the field. FFmpeg also has a[ Download ]button on Windows and Linux. - Choose your language from the Language menu (English or Italiano) and a look from the Theme menu. RemuxForge remembers both.
Continue with Quick start.
-
Desktop: install the new version over the old one. On macOS, run the
xattrcommand again. -
WebUI: close RemuxForge, extract the new archive over the old folder and start it again. Keep the
.remux-forgefolder next to the program: it holds your settings and presets. -
Docker:
docker compose pull && docker compose up -d, or pull the image and recreate the container.
Settings and presets carry over to the new version.
- Desktop on Windows: uninstall RemuxForge from Settings ▸ Apps.
- Desktop on macOS: move RemuxForge from Applications to the Trash.
- WebUI: delete the extracted folder.
The Desktop app keeps your settings in a separate folder, so a reinstall finds them again. To remove them as well, delete that folder; Settings lists where it is.
- Quick start: your first Remux, Split and Metadata job
- Docker: Compose, permissions and GPU access
- Troubleshooting: when a tool is not found or the page does not open
