Outlander Test Site
The Outlander Test Site is where research actually happens. The Outlanders try out new technology in the field before you may build it. You pick a research, bring its Knowledge Scrolls, and after the test the technology is unlocked for your team.

| Recipe | 1 Trapped Outlander, 60 Stone Brick, 30 Iron Plate |
| Noise | 20 per minute while testing |

You get the Trapped Outlander from the Portal of the Ancient. The Outlander call needs at least ten different kinds of items, so this is usually your second creature after the first Goblins. An Outlander Tinkerer works in front of the site and cheers when a test is done.
- Open the test site. The techtree fills most of the window.
- Pick an available research and press Select.
- Deliver the scrolls it needs: with the Deliver scrolls button, crouch and use with the scrolls in your hand, on a belt or with a grabber. The site only takes scrolls of the right tier, and only as many as the research still needs.
- When enough scrolls are in, the test starts by itself and uses them up.
- After the test time the research is done, with a bang and a cheer. You can select the next one.
The top of the window shows the selected research, the scrolls delivered so far and a progress bar, or the running test and its time left.
- A test site runs one research at a time. Build more test sites to research several things in parallel.
- A research selected or running in one test site cannot be picked in another.
- You cannot change the selection while a test runs. Before that, Clear selection lets you switch.
- Delivered scrolls stay in the site as a stock per tier. Switch to another research of the same tier and you lose nothing.
- In multiplayer, each team researches for itself.
By default a test takes 30 seconds per scroll of the research. Goblin Scholars (5 scrolls) takes 2.5 minutes, Great Portal (10 scrolls) 5 minutes. Server operators can change the time per scroll, or set a time for each research, in the mod's configuration file (see World Settings).
The window shows the techtree of one epoch at a time, with a button for each epoch from "I · Steam" to "V · Nuclear". It opens on your current epoch.
- Each research is a node with its name, its status and a Select button.
- Lines lead from a research to the ones that need it. Green means done, gold available, blue selected or testing.
- Prerequisites from an earlier epoch are listed on the node as "Also needs".
- A status line on each node says what is missing: the right scroll tier, or the researches it still needs.
A heading shows how many researches of the epoch are done.
The Deliver capsules button redeems Research Capsules from War Golems. You then choose one of two alternative recipes above the techtree. See Research Capsules.
