Changelog

What's new in each version of mcRPG, newest first, in plain language. Numbers are the defaults; your server can change them.

0.5.0: First beta

Released September 29, 2026. Built on mcMMO 2.3.002.

This is the first public release of mcRPG, so this list covers everything that's different from mcMMO. Anything not listed works the same as in mcMMO. For more detail, see Differences from mcMMO.

Specializations: the big change

  • You choose two skill categories to focus on: a Primary and a Secondary. Skills in your Primary level up 25% faster than normal, skills in your Secondary level at normal speed, and everything else levels at about a third of normal speed. More about Specializations
  • Until you choose, every skill levels at that slow speed, so it's worth choosing early. You'll get a reminder each time you log in until you've picked both.
  • Choose in a menu with /choosespecialization (or /csp), or type your choice as a command.
  • Anything you leveled before choosing is kept.
  • Changing your mind is costly. The only way to change a Specialization is to abandon it (/abandonspecialization, or /asp), and every skill in it loses 90% of its XP. You have to confirm first, because it can't be undone.

Skills are grouped into six categories

  • The 19 skills are split into Melee Combat, Ranged Combat, Metallurgy, Botany, Blacksmithing and Survivalism. You specialize in whole categories, not single skills.
  • A few skills sit somewhere new: Tridents counts as Ranged Combat, Unarmed as Survivalism, and Alchemy as Botany (it's grouped with farming).
  • /rpgstats groups your skills by category and shows your Specializations. The XP bar shows whether a skill is your Primary or Secondary.

New: category passives

  • Specialize in Survivalism, Blacksmithing, Metallurgy or Botany and get that category's skills to 25 levels combined to unlock a gear bonus:
    • Leather Mastery (Survivalism): full leather armor protects a bit better than iron.
    • Chainmail Mastery (Blacksmithing): full chainmail protects a bit better than diamond.
    • Copper Mastery (Metallurgy): full copper armor protects as well as iron.
    • Wooden Mastery (Botany): wooden tools break blocks 50% faster.
  • Mastered gear also wears out half as fast. More about passives

Smelting and Salvage are real skills now

  • In mcMMO you couldn't train these two directly: their levels were worked out from your other skills. Now they level on their own, count toward your Power Level, have their own leaderboards, and can be part of your Specializations.
  • Smelting levels when furnaces you own smelt ore. It's worth about half what mining that ore gave. Smelting
  • Salvage levels when you salvage gear that's been worn down, or enchanted gear you found in chests, while fishing, or from mobs. Salvage
  • New: Salvage Mastery. As Salvage levels up, you get more materials back from damaged gear, and you can salvage items that used to be too damaged.
  • Anyone can salvage diamond and netherite gear. mcMMO needed levels 50 and 100 for them.
  • New players can start salvaging straight away, at level 0.

New skills menu

  • /skills opens a menu of every skill with your level, your XP, how fast you're leveling it, and what earns XP. Click a skill to see all of its abilities, when each one unlocks, and its guide.
  • The in-game guides for Salvage and Smelting were rewritten. Smelting's used to just say "Coming soon".

Commands have new names

  • mcMMO's commands now start with rpg, so they don't clash with other plugins. For example:
    • /mcstats → /rpgstats
    • /mctop → /rpgtop
    • /mcrank → /rpgrank
    • /mcmmo → /mcrpg
    • /mmoedit → /rpgsetlevel
    • /addxp → /rpgaddxp
    • /inspect → /rpginspect
  • Skill commands like /mining and /swords keep their names.
  • Admin commands that take a skill now also take a whole category. For example, /rpgaddxp Steve blacksmithing 1000 gives XP in both Repair and Salvage.
  • Permissions start with mcrpg. instead of mcmmo..
  • The full list is on Commands and Permissions.

Removed

  • Parties: no party chat, party teleports, alliances, or shared XP and loot.
  • Chat channels: no admin chat or chat spying. Every message goes to normal chat.
  • XP boosts: no rank-based XP perks and no server-wide XP events (/xprate). Your Specializations are the only thing that changes how fast you level.
  • RetroMode, mcMMO's old 0–1,000 level scale. Skills use the 0–100 scale.
  • Links to mcMMO's website, Discord and donation page. mcRPG links to this wiki and its GitHub page instead.
  • The version message when you log in. /mcrpg still shows the version.
  • Usage statistics (bStats). mcRPG doesn't send any.

For server owners

  • mcRPG has its own data. It uses its own plugin folder, data file and database tables, so it never touches mcMMO's data. It can't import mcMMO's data either, so everyone starts fresh.
  • Don't run it alongside mcMMO. They'd both apply their skills to everything players do.
  • New settings for Specializations and passives in config.yml and experience.yml. See Server Setup.
  • Placeholders are now %mcrpg_...%, with new ones for each player's Primary and Secondary Specialization. WorldGuard flags are mcrpg, mcrpg-xp and mcrpg-hardcore.
