Salvage

Category: Blacksmithing · Command: /salvage · Super ability: None

Salvage breaks gear you don't need back down into its materials, and can pull its enchantments out as enchanted books. In mcMMO, Salvage was a "child" skill whose level came from other skills. In mcRPG it's a full skill that earns its own XP.

How to salvage

  1. Place a gold block. This is your Salvage anvil.
  2. Hold the item you want to salvage.
  3. Right-click the gold block. If the item is enchanted, the first click shows a warning; right-click again within a few seconds to go ahead.

The item is destroyed, and you get back some of its materials: the more durability it has left, the more you get. Any level can salvage any gear.

Earning XP

Salvage XP comes from two things: wear and found enchantments.

Wear

You earn XP for the durability the item lost while a player used or wore it. It pays exactly what Repair would pay for restoring that durability:

Wear XP = share of max durability worn × item multiplier × 1,000 × material multiplier

The multipliers are the same as Repair's (iron 2.5, diamond 5.0 and so on).

  • mcRPG keeps a wear counter on every item. A freshly crafted item, a mob drop or a villager trade has no wear, so it gives no Wear XP.
  • The counter never counts more than the durability the item is actually missing, so repairing an item (or using Mending) lowers it too.
  • An item that's too damaged to give back even one material can't be salvaged. At low levels that caps how much wear counts: about 2/3 of a pickaxe, half a sword, 7/8 of a chestplate. Salvage Mastery (below) raises that limit as you level.

Found enchantments

Gear you found with enchantments pays 1,000 XP per enchantment level it had when you found it. "Found" means it came from a loot chest, a fishing catch, or a mob drop.

Enchantments added at an enchanting table or anvil, and gear bought from villagers, pay nothing for their enchantments. If an enchantment is removed later (for example at a grindstone), it stops counting.

Examples

Item XP
Iron pickaxe, worn as far as it can go at a low level (about 2/3) about 1,667
Same pickaxe worn out completely, at level 67 or higher about 2,500
Iron chestplate worn down to 1/8 durability 4,375
Diamond chestplate from an End City chest with Protection III and Unbreaking II, never worn 5,000
That chestplate after you wear it down to 40% durability 23,000
A freshly crafted diamond sword 0

The trade-off: worn-out gear gives more XP but fewer materials back.

Abilities

Ability Unlocks What it does
Scrap Collector Level 0 (ranks at 0, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40) The most materials one salvage can give back: 1 at rank 1, then 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16. Rank 4 (level 20) covers every vanilla item.
Salvage Mastery From the start Get back part of the materials the item's damage cost you: up to 50% of them at level 100. It also lets you salvage items that would otherwise be too damaged.
Arcane Salvage Level 10 (ranks at 10, 25, 35, 50, 65, 75, 85, 100) Chance to turn the item's enchantments into enchanted books. At rank 8, each enchantment has a 32.5% chance to come back at full level and a 17.5% chance to come back one level lower.

Salvage Mastery

Without Salvage Mastery, a damaged item gives back materials in proportion to its remaining durability, and a worn-out item gives back nothing. Salvage Mastery returns part of the difference. Whole materials are guaranteed, and a leftover fraction is a chance at one more.

Item No mastery Level 50 Level 100
Iron pickaxe at 50% durability 1 iron 1, 50% chance of 2 2
Diamond chestplate at 40% durability 3 diamonds 4, 25% chance of 5 5, 50% chance of 6
Worn-out diamond chestplate too damaged 2 4
Worn-out iron pickaxe too damaged too damaged 1, 50% chance of 2
Worn-out iron sword too damaged too damaged 1

A completely worn-out item becomes salvageable at: chestplate level 25, leggings 29, helmet 40, boots 50, pickaxe or axe 67, sword or hoe 100. Shovels and spears never become salvageable once they're worn out, and a damaged shovel can't be salvaged at all, so shovels earn no Wear XP.

Salvage Mastery never gives back everything, so wearing gear out and salvaging it always costs you some materials.

Tips

  • Fishing and Salvage go together. Fishing's treasure brings up enchanted gear, which is worth salvaging for its enchantments and books.
  • Hold on to worn-out armor instead of throwing it away. Armor pays the most Wear XP.
  • Salvage is in Blacksmithing with Repair. See Chainmail Mastery for Blacksmithing's passive.
