Getting Started
This page covers what you need for your first hour on an mcRPG server.
There's nothing to unlock. Mining ore trains Mining, fighting with a sword trains Swords, catching fish trains Fishing, and so on for all 19 skills. Each level makes the skill's abilities a little stronger, and some levels unlock new abilities. Messages above your hotbar tell you when you earn XP, level up, or unlock something.
Levels go from 0 to 100 for almost everything. A few skills keep improving past 100 (see Leveling and XP).
Every player picks two skill categories:
- Primary Specialization: every skill in it earns 1.25× XP.
- Secondary Specialization: every skill in it earns 1.0× XP.
- Everything else earns 0.35× XP. It still levels, just slowly.
Until you choose, every skill earns 0.35×, so it pays to choose early. You'll get a reminder each time you log in until both are picked. Click it, or type:
/specialization
(/csp for short.) The menu has one row per category. Left-click a category to make it your Primary, right-click to make it your Secondary, then confirm.
Choose carefully. The only way to change a Specialization is to abandon it, and every skill in an abandoned category keeps just 10% of its XP. Progress you made before choosing is kept, so if you've been fishing all week, choosing Survivalism keeps your Fishing level.
Not sure what to pick? The Specializations page has advice and example builds.

Right-click with the item to ready it, then do the action within a few seconds. Super abilities unlock at level 5, last 2 seconds plus 1 second for every 5 levels (22 seconds at level 100), and have a 4-minute cooldown. Check cooldowns with /rpgcooldowns. If right-clicking readies abilities when you don't want it to, turn readying off with /rpgability.

- Placed blocks give no XP. Mining, Woodcutting, Herbalism and Excavation only pay for blocks that generated naturally, so placing and breaking the same block does nothing.
- Mobs from spawners, spawn eggs and nether portals give no combat XP. Naturally spawned and bred mobs do.
- Combat XP counts the damage you deal. A mob already weakened by something else gives less. See Leveling and XP.
- There are no XP boosts or XP events. The only thing that changes your XP rate is your Specializations.
- No parties or chat channels. mcRPG keeps the focus on skills.
