Automatic and Voice Uploads

Flashback 0.8 can upload new clips to Flashback Cloud on its own, for the games you pick, or when you say "Flashback upload". Both are off until you turn them on, both wait until you stop playing by default, and both start new uploads as Only me unless you choose otherwise.

You need a Cloud account with a plan to upload. See Cloud Plans and Billing.

Turn on automatic uploads

  1. Open the Cloud tab and sign in.
  2. Open the Account section (Ctrl+4). Under Uploads, expand Automatic and voice uploads; folded, it shows a one-line summary of your choices.
  3. Check Who sees new uploads, the visibility automatic, voice and Library uploads start with.
  4. Turn on Upload new clips automatically. "New clips from the games you tick upload with the visibility above. Screenshots stay on this PC."
  5. Under Games, tick the games whose new clips should upload. The list has the games in your Library and the games Flashback recognizes; you can choose up to 50.
  6. Choose When automatic and voice uploads start, and the upload limit while you play (both below).

From then on, every new video saved from a ticked game joins the Upload queue. Clips already on your PC aren't added retroactively; upload those yourself.

What is never uploaded automatically

  • Screenshots. They stay on your PC unless you upload one yourself.
  • Clips from games you didn't tick, and Desktop clips.
  • Montages. The Montages folder is left out of the game list.
  • A clip already uploaded from this PC. It is never queued twice.

Choose when uploads run

Setting What happens
After I stop playing (default) Uploads wait until no game has been in front for two minutes, and pause again if a game comes back.
Right away Uploads start at once, throttled by the limit below while you play. A clip that needs converting still waits until you stop playing.

Why some clips always wait

Some clips have to be converted into a browser-ready copy before upload, for example an HEVC clip or one recorded above 60 FPS. Converting uses the video encoder, which your game and the recorder are already using, so Flashback never prepares a clip that needs converting while a game is in front, even with Right away. You'll see "Clip saved · uploads after you stop playing".

Limit uploads while you play

While a game is running, limit uploads to N Mbit/s sets how fast automatic and voice uploads may send while a game is in front. The default is 4 Mbit/s, and you can pick anything from 1 to 100. It keeps an upload from causing ping spikes mid-match. Uploads you start yourself run at full speed.

Upload with your voice

Say "Flashback upload" or "Flashback upload that" (with or without "Hey" in front) to save a clip and upload it in one go.

To use it, turn on both:

  • Voice controls in Settings (Save captures with my voice, the offline recognition behind "Flashback clip" and "Flashback screenshot"), and
  • Voice upload ("Flashback, upload") under Automatic and voice uploads in the Cloud tab's Account section.

If voice controls are off in Settings, the Cloud tab tells you Flashback isn't listening for the phrase yet.

While the Cloud tab switch is off, Flashback doesn't even load the upload phrases into the recognizer.

What happens when you say it:

  1. Flashback saves a replay exactly like "Flashback clip", using your configured replay length.
  2. It queues the clip with your default visibility and your timing setting, so by default it uploads once you finish playing.
  3. When the upload finishes, if the clip has a link (Anyone with the link, or Public on my profile), the link is copied to your clipboard and the notice says "Uploaded to Cloud · Link copied".

If the clip's game is also on your automatic list, the voice request takes over that queued item, so you still get the link copied. If you're signed out, have no plan, or uploads are paused, the clip is still saved and the notice ("Clip saved · not uploaded yet") explains why.

Voice recognition runs entirely on your PC. Only your selected microphone is listened to, and nothing you say is stored or uploaded. See Privacy.

The upload queue

  • The queue survives restarts. Close Flashback mid-upload and it carries on next time from its last checkpoint.
  • If you move or delete a queued clip before it uploads, the item is cancelled and you're told.
  • Network errors are retried. If an item keeps failing, Flashback drops it and tells you.
  • With nothing queued, the queue makes no network requests.

When automatic uploads pause

If you have no plan, your storage or item limit is full, or you've hit the day's upload allowance, the queue pauses and you get one tray notice a day titled "Automatic uploads are paused" that says why. The queue resumes once the reason is gone.

If your default visibility isn't available at that moment (for example, profiles are paused or you haven't picked a @username), the clip uploads as Only me and the notice says so ("Uploaded as Only me").

Ghost Mode

In Ghost Mode, every upload notice stays silent. Uploads still follow your settings.

Quick answers

Will automatic uploads hurt my game? They're designed not to. By default nothing uploads until you've stopped playing for two minutes; with Right away, uploads are capped to your chosen rate while you play, and clips that need converting always wait.

Can automatic uploads make my clips public? Only if you set your default visibility to something wider than Only me. The default is Only me.

Does the voice command work without a plan? It still saves the clip; it just can't upload it, and the notice tells you why.
