Voice Commands

Voice commands let you save a clip, take a screenshot or send a clip to Flashback Cloud by saying a short phrase, without taking your hands off the game. Recognition runs entirely on your PC and listens only to the microphone you choose. This page lists every phrase and explains how it stays private.

Turn it on

  1. Open Settings > Voice controls.
  2. Turn on Save captures with my voice.
  3. Pick the Listening microphone. Default microphone follows whatever Windows uses as its default input.
  4. Adjust Sensitivity if needed (see below), then apply your settings.

Voice commands are off by default. When they're on, the tray menu shows Voice controls · Listening, and the tray tooltip says so too.

What you can say

Every command starts with "Flashback". You can put "Hey" in front, and you can pause between "Flash" and "back".

Say Does
"Flashback, clip" Saves a replay
"Flashback, clip that" Saves a replay
"Flashback, save" Saves a replay
"Flashback, save that" Saves a replay
"Flashback, screenshot" Takes a screenshot
"Flashback, screenshot this" Takes a screenshot
"Flashback, screenshot that" Takes a screenshot
"Flashback, upload" Saves a replay and queues it for Flashback Cloud
"Flashback, upload that" Saves a replay and queues it for Flashback Cloud

"Screen shot" said as two words works too. A short cooldown after each command stops one phrase from saving twice.

A voice save behaves exactly like pressing your shortcut: same replay length, same name and folder, same sound and notification. If smart replay length is on, a voice save uses your normal length.

"Flashback, upload"

The upload phrases need two switches: Save captures with my voice in Settings, and Voice upload under Automatic and voice uploads in the Cloud tab's Account section. Open Cloud upload settings in Settings takes you there. With both on, "Flashback, upload":

  1. Saves a replay, just like "Flashback, clip".
  2. Queues that clip for upload with your default visibility and the upload timing you chose (for example, after you stop playing).
  3. When the upload finishes, copies the link to your clipboard if the clip has one. A clip set to Only me has no share link, so there's nothing to copy.

Uploading needs a signed-in Cloud account with a plan. Without one, or with a full quota, the queue waits and Flashback tells you why. Upload settings are explained on Automatic and Voice Uploads.

Sensitivity

Sensitivity (55% by default) runs from Fewer accidental triggers to Easier to trigger. It adjusts leveling for quiet microphones and how many possible pronunciations stay active.

  • Commands not being heard? Raise it a little, or move closer to the mic.
  • Commands firing when you didn't mean them to? Lower it.

Very high settings are easier to trigger but may react to similar-sounding speech.

Private by design

  • Microphone only. Recognition receives only the microphone you selected. Game audio, Discord, videos, browser audio and the rest of your desktop sound are never fed into it.
  • On your PC. A small offline keyword model runs locally (sherpa-onnx with a compact INT8 English keyword model). There's no cloud speech service and no internet connection involved.
  • Not stored. Microphone audio is processed in memory. It's never recorded separately, never uploaded, and never written to logs or diagnostics.

Two things to know:

  • Your command can be heard in the clip. If you also record your microphone in clips, the clip records whatever you say, including the command. That's the clip recording, not the voice feature.
  • Other sound can leak into a mic. Loud speakers, or a virtual input that mixes desktop audio into your mic, can carry other sound into the microphone. Headphones give the cleanest results.

Troubleshooting

Problem Try
Tray says Voice controls · Needs attention The microphone may be unplugged or unavailable. Check the Listening microphone setting and that Windows can see the device. Flashback shows the reason in Settings.
Voice controls · Reconnecting... Flashback lost the microphone and is reconnecting. This usually clears by itself when the device comes back.
Nothing happens Make sure the phrase starts with "Flashback", the buffer is running (for clips), and you're using the mic selected under Listening microphone. Raise Sensitivity a step.
Triggers from game or stream audio Use headphones, avoid virtual mic mixers, and lower Sensitivity.
"Upload" only saves a clip Turn on Voice: "Flashback upload" in the Cloud tab and check you're signed in with a plan.
