Diagnostics and Logs
Flashback keeps a small log on your PC so problems can be investigated, and it never sends it anywhere by itself. This page explains where the log is, what's in it, and how to share it safely when support asks.
| Location | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Flashback\Logs |
| Size | At most five files of 2 MB each; the oldest is replaced as new entries arrive |
| Leaves your PC | Never on its own |
To open the folder, paste %LOCALAPPDATA%\Flashback\Logs into the File Explorer address bar.
Because it's written for troubleshooting, the log can mention:
- the game being recorded,
- your audio device names,
- file paths, which include your Windows user name,
- what the recorder was doing, such as starts, stops and fallbacks,
- capture worker exit codes and health readings when something goes wrong.
It never contains captured audio, captured frames, environment variables, sign-in tokens, or full command lines with private paths.
When support asks for diagnostics, use the Diagnostics button at the bottom of Settings rather than sending the raw files.
- Open Settings and choose Diagnostics.
- Flashback shows the newest log entries (up to 512 KB) in a window, with personal details already replaced.
- Read it. You can edit the text before sharing.
- Choose Copy or Save as, then paste or attach it in your support request.
Nothing is sent automatically at any step.
Before you see it, the Diagnostics text has these replaced:
- names of your captures and games,
- audio device names,
- your Windows user name and computer name,
- your profile, data and clip folder paths,
- email addresses,
- network addresses with ports,
- account IDs.
The Report a bug button in Settings opens the support form with your Flashback version already filled in. Describe what you did, what you expected and what happened, then paste your Diagnostics text if support asks for it.
If Flashback won't start at all, the "Flashback could not start" message offers the bug report form too (choose No).
| What | Where |
|---|---|
| Clips and screenshots |
%USERPROFILE%\Videos\Flashback (unless you chose another folder) |
| Settings and logs | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Flashback |
| Rolling replay buffer | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Flashback\Buffer |
| Clip metadata (input timelines, tags, capture health reports, Cloud upload record) | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Flashback\ClipMetadata |
| Cloud session, paused upload, upload queue | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Flashback\Cloud |
Don't send files from the Cloud folder to anyone. The session there is protected by Windows for your user account, and support never needs it.
