Storage Limit
Flashback can keep its saved clips and screenshots under a size you choose, so a busy week of gaming doesn't quietly fill your drive. This page explains exactly what the limit counts, when it runs, what it removes and what it never touches.
Short version: the default limit is 20 GB of captures Flashback made. When you go over it, Flashback permanently removes its oldest captures first. If you'd rather keep everything, switch the limit to Unlimited in Settings > Storage & shortcuts.
Open Settings > Storage & shortcuts:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Storage limit | A slider from 1 GB to 250 GB. The default is 20 GB. |
| Unlimited | "Never remove saved captures automatically." The slider no longer applies. |
| Storage intelligence > Review | Scans capture sizes, ages and exact duplicates on demand, without deleting anything. |
Changes take effect when you press Apply changes. The line under the limit shows how much your captures use, for example 14.2 GB of 20 GB · 71% used.
- Only captures Flashback made: the clips and screenshots it saved in your clip folder, including trims and Discord copies.
-
Not other files. Other videos and pictures in the same folder are shown in the Library but never counted and never removed. The usage line says how many it left out, for example
3 other files not counted. -
Not the replay buffer. The rolling buffer lives in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Flashback\Buffer, outside your clip folder, and manages its own size. - Not Cloud. Clips you uploaded to Flashback Cloud have their own plan storage. Removing a local capture never deletes its Cloud copy.
If you point Flashback at a folder that already holds other media, it offers to use a Flashback subfolder instead, so its captures stay apart from everything else.
With a limit set, Flashback checks it:
- At startup.
- After each save.
- When you apply settings.
That third point matters: if you lower the limit and press Apply changes while your captures are over the new size, the oldest ones are removed straight away. Check the usage line before lowering it, and move anything you want to keep out of the clip folder first.
- Oldest first. Flashback removes the oldest captures it made until the total is back under the limit.
- Removed for good. Captures removed by the limit don't go to the Recycle Bin. Copy anything important somewhere outside the clip folder.
- The newest capture always stays, even when it alone is bigger than the limit.
- The clip open in the Editor stays, and so do the clips a montage is using while it exports.
-
Files in use wait. A file another program has open is skipped and retried on a later check, so the usage line can read slightly over the limit with
newest or unavailable captures stay safe. - Unlimited never removes anything automatically.
Review under Storage intelligence lists your largest captures, old ones and exact duplicates, with live progress for each stage of the scan. It's read-only: it never deletes or moves a file. Press Esc to cancel a scan, then decide for yourself what to keep.
To delete in bulk, use the Library: select several captures, or use Manage > Delete all clips or Delete all screenshots (both ask twice).
If clips you expected are gone from your clip folder:
- Open Settings > Storage & shortcuts and check the limit. At the default 20 GB, roughly three hours of Balanced (15 Mbps) clips fill it.
- Raise the limit, or turn on Unlimited, and press Apply changes.
- If you uploaded any of them to Flashback Cloud, those Cloud copies are unaffected.
If the limit was already Unlimited, see Troubleshooting and Getting help.
