Profiles and Friends

Not open yet. Profiles and friends are built into 0.8.0 and open from the Cloud server later; no app update is needed. Until then the Cloud tab shows My clips and Account, and clips can be Only me or Anyone with the link. This page describes how they work once they open.

Flashback 0.8 adds optional profiles, friends, a friends' feed, reactions, pinned clips, collections and search to Flashback Cloud. You choose whether to use any of it, and nothing about you is shown until you pick a @username.

Who can use it: anyone with a Flashback Cloud account in the United States, for now. You don't need a plan; uploading is the only Cloud feature that does. Outside the US, your own clips, uploads, billing and links work exactly as before, and social pages say "Profiles and friends aren't available in your region yet."

Contents

Make a profile

You can start from either place:

  • In the app: Cloud tab > Make your profile > Pick a @username. A live preview shows what friends will see.
  • On the web: sign in at flashbk.gg/account and choose Make a profile.

You'll be asked to accept the current Terms and Privacy Policy if you haven't already. Then fill in:

Field Rules
@username Required. See Usernames.
Display name Optional, up to 32 characters. Pre-filled from Discord or Google, but nothing is published until you save. Without one, people see your @username.
Bio Optional, up to 160 characters and 3 line breaks. Shown as plain text; links aren't clickable.
Picture A copy of your Discord (or Google) picture by default, or no picture. Where offered, you can upload your own: PNG or JPEG, up to 2 MB and at least 64 pixels on each side, with location and other hidden details removed. Cloud may store it as a smaller copy.
Who can see my profile Friends (default), Anyone signed in to Flashback, or Everyone (where offered). See below.

Making a profile doesn't change any clip. Your clips keep the visibility they already have.

Usernames

  • 3 to 20 characters: lowercase letters, numbers, dots and underscores. Dots and underscores go between letters or numbers.
  • Unique. Some names are reserved or filtered; if yours is taken or refused, the form tells you it isn't available. Names the website itself uses (such as faq or support), names that sound official, and names that look like files (such as sitemap.xml) can't be usernames, so a profile link can never pose as a Flashback page.
  • Change it at most once every 7 days.
  • After a change, your old name is held for you for 30 days, then released for others.
  • An old username never points to your new one. flashbk.gg/u/<old-name> looks exactly like a name that doesn't exist, so a rename really does shake off people who only knew the old name.

People add you by your @username. Your profile address is:

https://flashbk.gg/u/<username>

The short form flashbk.gg/<username> (or flashbk.gg/@username) takes people to the same page, so it's easy to say out loud or type. Capital letters and an @ don't matter: flashbk.gg/u/Nova.GG and flashbk.gg/u/@nova.gg both lead to flashbk.gg/u/nova.gg, the one address every profile has. Copy profile link in the app copies the full address.

Who can see your profile

Your profile header is your picture, display name, @username and bio. Who sees it, and your profile page, depends on this setting:

Who can see my profile Who sees your header and profile page
Friends (default) You, your friends, and anyone you've sent a friend request to (so they know who's asking)
Anyone signed in to Flashback Also any signed-in Flashback Cloud account
Everyone, including people who aren't signed in (where offered) Also visitors who aren't signed in

Anyone else who looks up your @username sees only the handle and an Add friend button: no picture, name, bio or clips.

A profile set to Everyone shows a link preview, with its name, bio and a picture, when the link is pasted into a chat app. Other profiles show no preview.

Your profile setting decides who sees you. Each clip's own visibility decides who sees that clip. A profile never shows a clip to someone the clip's visibility doesn't allow. See Sharing and Visibility.

Your profile page

flashbk.gg/u/<username> shows, to each viewer, only what that viewer is allowed to see:

  1. The header, with a friend button (Add friend, Requested, Friends or Accept) and a ... menu (Block, Block and report, Report).
  2. Pinned clips, up to six.
  3. Collections the viewer may see.
  4. One section per game, with the newest 12 clips and See all. Clips without a game are grouped under "Other". Games are grouped sensibly, so a game reported by name and by its executable lands in the same section.

Clips set to Only me never appear, and link-only clips (Anyone with the link) aren't listed on your profile.

In the app, the Cloud tab has Feed, My clips, Friends and Account sections (Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+4). Your profile card shows what friends see, with Edit profile, View on web (opens your page in the browser), and a ... menu with Change picture, Collections and Copy profile link. Turn on Group by game in My clips to group your Cloud clips the same way your profile does. See Flashback Cloud.

Friends

  • Add friends by @username only. There are no suggestions, no friend codes and no contact importing. In the app, use Add by @username in the Friends section.
  • Friendship is mutual. Both people have to agree. If you both send each other a request, you become friends at once.
  • Requests show Accept and Decline, with Block and Report right beside them.
  • Declining is silent. The sender isn't told and keeps seeing "Requested". Sending again doesn't reach you.
  • You can cancel a request you sent, or remove a friend at any time.

Friends see your profile and the clips you've set to Friends or Public on my profile, grouped by game, plus your pins and the collections you share with them.

The feed

The feed lists what your friends have shared with you: their clips set to Friends or Public on my profile, newest share first, from the last 30 days.

  • Open it in the app's Feed section or at flashbk.gg/account.
  • Watch plays a clip in the app's own player window; Open on web opens its page.
  • When a friend changes an older clip to Friends, it appears in your feed once, as a new share.
  • Your own clips and link-only clips don't appear in the feed.

Reactions and views

Reactions

Signed-in viewers can react to clips that show who posted them, with a fixed set of five: fire, skull, laugh, wow and clap. Each one toggles on or off, once per person per clip.

  • Counts only. Nobody, including the clip's owner, sees who reacted. You see your own reactions highlighted.
  • You can't react to your own clips, or across a block.
  • Turn reactions off for your whole profile with Allow reactions on my clips, or for one clip. That hides the counts and buttons and refuses new reactions. Existing reactions are kept and come back if you turn them on again.

Views

  • Views are counted on a clip's page, at most once per visitor per clip per day. Your own views don't count, and a clip only counts so many signed-in views a day, so throwaway accounts can't inflate it. The page still opens either way.
  • You always see your clips' counts. Others see a count only on clips that show who posted them.
  • View counts are approximate, aren't filtered for fraud, and have no monetary or other value.

Pinned clips and collections

Pins put up to six of your own clips, in your order, at the top of your profile. A viewer only sees the pins they're allowed to see.

Collections group your clips under a title and an optional description, with their own audience: Only me, Friends or Public. Two rules keep them safe:

  • A collection never widens a clip's audience. Inside a collection, each viewer sees only the clips they could already see.
  • A collection with nothing visible to a viewer is hidden from them.

Collections are edited on the web at flashbk.gg/account/collections. Collections in the app's profile card menu links there. A deleted clip drops out of pins and collections automatically.

Tags and search

Tags help you and your friends find clips.

  • Up to 10 tags per clip, each with letters, numbers, - and _.
  • When you upload, the dialog fills in the tags you gave the clip on your PC. Remove any you don't want to share; local tags never upload unless you keep them.
  • Edit tags later in the app or on a clip's page on the web.

Search lives in the app's Cloud tab and at flashbk.gg/account/search. It has two scopes: My clips and Friends' clips.

Type Finds
ace Clips whose title or game matches the word
#clutch Clips tagged clutch
game:valorant Clips from that game

Results only include clips you're allowed to see. Friends' clips searches what your friends shared with friends or publicly.

Blocking

Block someone from the ... menu on their profile, from a friend request, or with Block by @username in the app. A block, in either direction, immediately:

  • removes the friendship and any pending requests both ways,
  • removes each person's reactions on the other's clips,
  • hides each of you from the other while signed in: profile, clips, feed, search and requests,
  • happens silently. The other person isn't told.

A block never stops either of you from reporting the other. Show people you blocked lists your blocks and lets you Unblock.

One honest limit: a block works on signed-in accounts. Anyone can still open a link you shared as Anyone with the link, or a profile you set to Everyone, while signed out. Profiles default to Friends, so a blocked person who signs out sees nothing of a default profile.

More on reporting is on Reporting and Safety.

Delete your profile

Choose Delete profile in the app's profile settings or on the web.

Removed Kept
Your profile and @username Your Cloud account and plan
Friends and friend requests Your Cloud clips (and their visibility settings)
Reactions you added The people you blocked
Pins and collections

Your username is held for you for 30 days. To delete everything, including clips and the account, see Cloud Account and Data.

Accounts for ages 13 to 17

Flashback Cloud is for ages 13 and up. For accounts of people aged 13 to 17:

  • the profile is always friends-only,
  • clips can't be posted publicly,
  • bios can't contain links or contact details.

Not in 0.8

These are deliberately left out of 0.8: comments, direct messages, following people who aren't your friends, a public "browse all clips" page, and search-engine indexing of profiles.
