Style sheet

Type: custom hybrid (two media), tested in production (pass)

  • Medium phrase: "A mixed-media picture-book illustration, widescreen 16:9, in two distinct media on heavy cream paper. The character is drawn only in graphite pencil outline filled with layered coloured pencil, visibly hand-drawn with slight pencil wobble and light construction lines. The background is painted only in flat opaque matte gouache in chunky simple shapes with visible brush texture and no outlines." Video anchor: "Mixed-media stop-motion animation: a graphite and coloured-pencil character whose lines slightly re-draw and flicker frame to frame in a gentle stepped cadence, over a flat opaque gouache background whose painted shapes move as flat pieces, drawn and painted, not rendered."
  • Character design: graphite outline, pencil hatching, full layered coloured pencil with visible strokes, "no paint touching him"; a thin pencil line (a kite string) can connect the two layers and sells the hybrid.
  • Materials / rendering: gouache background flat, matte and chalky with brush drag and no outlines; paper texture across the whole image.
  • Light: one sun direction read as pencil hatching on the character and one flat darker shadow shape on the painted ground.
  • Motion: the painted shapes move as flat pieces (a kite swinging, clouds drifting); the character has one beat; camera locked.
  • Stability line: "Strictly two media: the [character] in graphite and coloured pencil only, the [background elements] in flat opaque gouache only; painted shapes stay flat and matte and do not boil or crawl, paper texture visible throughout, consistent character drawing."
  • Guards: no paint on the character, no pencil outlines appearing on the gouache shapes, no watercolour, no ink, no gradients, no photorealism, no 3D rendering, no live-action look.
  • Known failures: none in the test take (boy flying a kite on a hill). The safest of the five hybrids because gouache is stable in motion.
