Install Grok
▶ Watch in the Getting Started video: Install in Grok (4:50)
Before you start: Grok skills are available on the free trial and paid plans only. See Requirements and Recommendations.
Grok installs the skills itself, straight from GitHub into your skill library. Nothing needs installing on your computer.
-
Start a chat with Grok and paste this message:
Install these two skills into my skill library from GitHub. Each link is one skill folder (SKILL.md plus its references folder); install only these two folders: https://github.com/ratava/videoexpress-scripting-skill/tree/main/chatgpt/skills/videoexpress-scripting https://github.com/ratava/videoexpress-scripting-skill/tree/main/chatgpt-prompt/skills/videoexpress-promptThe first is VideoExpress Scripting. The second is the companion skill, VideoExpress Prompt, a step-by-step wizard for one image or clip prompt; leave its line out if you don't want it.
Use these folder links, not the repo's home page. The repo holds a separate build of each skill worded for Claude, with the same names.
-
When Grok asks whether it should check for updates regularly, answer yes. That keeps the skills current when a new version is released.
-
Start a new chat and try "I've got an idea for a VideoExpress video. Help me plan it."
With regular checks on, Grok picks up new versions itself. To update straight away, ask Grok to reinstall the two skills from the same links.
If you work in Grok Build, xAI's agent CLI, on your own computer, you can install the skills there instead with the open-source skills CLI (needs Node.js). Skills installed this way are only seen by Grok Build on that computer, not by the Grok app.
npx skills add https://github.com/ratava/videoexpress-scripting-skill/tree/main/chatgpt/skills/videoexpress-scripting -a grok -g
npx skills add https://github.com/ratava/videoexpress-scripting-skill/tree/main/chatgpt-prompt/skills/videoexpress-prompt -a grok -g
-g installs to ~/.grok/skills/; leave it off to install into the current folder's .grok/skills/ only. To update, run the same commands again.
The assisted and automatic operating modes need an assistant that can control a browser. In Grok Build that comes from a browser plugin (for example Chrome DevTools). Where your Grok can't control a browser, use the manual mode: Grok plans and writes every prompt, and you paste them into VideoExpress yourself.
