Magneto

The Master of Magnetism. He lifts anything with metal in it, tears metal blocks out of the ground, pulls the metal out of everything around him (the ore in the rock included) into his inventory, fires a machine-gun stream of iron shrapnel, strips his enemies of their armor and weapons, and catches arrows in mid-air. In the X-Men films his power has no glow at all: metal just moves, and so it does here.

Magneto's magnetic shield

Becoming Magneto

Magneto's Helmet is crafted from exactly 5 Netherite Blocks in the normal helmet shape:

N N N
N . N

N = Netherite Block

Equipping the helmet for the first time permanently unlocks all of Magneto's abilities, if you have no other power. While Magneto wears the helmet, his whole skin turns into Magneto's classic suit: a red suit with purple gloves, boots and cape.

The helmet

While the helmet is worn by Magneto:

  • Armor: the helmet alone gives the protection of a full Netherite set: 20 armor, 12 armor toughness and 40% knockback resistance.
  • Infinite durability: the helmet never takes damage and never breaks.
  • Mental immunity: 100% immune to Nausea (the dizziness from Wanda's Chaos Beam, pufferfish and so on). Nausea he already has is removed the moment the helmet goes on.
  • No damage immunity: Magneto still takes the full physical damage from the Chaos Beam and all of Wanda's other attacks. Only the Nausea is blocked.

Abilities

# Key Ability How it works
1 R Metal Telekinesis (Sneak: Magnetic Pull) Look at a metal target up to 32 blocks away (or a metal block up to 24 blocks away) and press R to take hold of it. While held, it floats where you look. Press R again to launch it, or Sneak + R to set it down gently. When R isn't holding anything, Sneak + R is the Magnetic Pull: everything metal around you flies into your inventory.
2 G (hold) Iron Shrapnel Storm Hold G to fire a machine-gun stream of iron shrapnel (10 shards per second), paid for with iron from your inventory.
3 V Armor & Weapon Strip Look at an enemy and press V. Every metal weapon and armor piece is ripped off and drops to the ground.
4 B (toggle) Magnetic Shield An invisible magnetic field that catches metal projectiles.
5 N (toggle) Magnetic Flight Smooth, steady flight.

1. Metal Telekinesis

  • Valid targets: everything with metal in it. Any creature or player with iron, gold, copper or netherite anywhere in its equipment (armor, either hand, horse armor), Iron Golems, every minecart, Ultron's Sentries, Vision and White Vision (unless he is phased: then he slips out of your grip), the Ultron hero, the Iron Spider, the Vision of a Hex (only Magneto can lift him), dropped metal items, a falling anvil or a block someone threw, and metal arrows and tridents in flight (catch them, then throw them back). The villains are held as bosses (below), and so is Thanos's sword. Never Mjolnir: it answers only to a worthy hand, never to magnetism. Not the heroes' own gear (his helmet, Wanda's crown), nor Loki's copies, which have no real metal on them.
  • Metal blocks. Look at a metal block up to 24 blocks away and press R (when nothing else is in the way): iron, gold, copper and netherite blocks, ores, anvils, rails, chains, bars, lanterns, doors (they come out whole), pressure plates, pistons, lightning rods... up to the hardness of a netherite block (50). It floats in front of you like a lifted block, and you can throw it or set it down (a door lands as a door, a hanging lantern that can't hang stands). Blocks that hold things (hoppers, blast furnaces, crafters, bells) stay: the message says "That one is fixed in place", and "It holds things: empty it" when something is inside. The Magnetic Pull takes them, below. Spawn protection, Adventure mode and claim mods are respected, and in a boss arena the block is only borrowed (see Scarlet Witch).
  • Iron Golem control: Magneto can lift any Iron Golem and throw it at enemies. A thrown golem hits like a wrecking ball (up to 15 damage to whatever it slams into), takes no damage itself, never turns on Magneto and starts fighting the monster it hit. A Sentry he throws is crushed (with grey metal sparks and an anvil's clang).
  • Launch: launched targets fly at high speed (2.6 blocks per tick by default). When they slam into a wall or the floor they take heavy impact damage (up to 16) and hurt any creature they crash into (up to 6 damage).
  • One target at a time. The hold breaks automatically if the target dies, leaves the dimension or gets more than 48 blocks away, or when a held Vision phases. A held player is released after 30 seconds, so nobody is trapped forever. With PvP off (or a teammate), a player or someone's pet you let go of or throw is not hurt by the fall or the landing, and you cannot grab the same player again for 3 seconds (this is so for every telekinesis, Wanda's, Billy's and the Phoenix's too).
  • Bosses. Ultron, Thanos and Apocalypse can be held as bosses, 1.5 times as long as Wanda holds them: 4.5 seconds for Ultron's bodies (vibranium is metal), 3 seconds for Thanos, 4.5 for Apocalypse while he wears his armor (never while his shield is up, and not in his true form). Then they break free and nobody can hold them again for 12 seconds. Thanos's sword in flight can be caught, and it tears free after 3 seconds. The Wither, the Warden, the Elder Guardian and the Ender Dragon are not metal. See Ultron, Thanos and Apocalypse.

The Magnetic Pull (Sneak + R)

When R isn't holding anything, press Sneak + R. Magneto's arms fly wide, then his fists come in to his chest. A ring spreads out 8 blocks round him, and everything metal there flies to his hand along lines of force and goes straight into his inventory (what doesn't fit drops at his feet). "The metal comes to you (23)."

  • Ores, through rock. Every ore within 8 blocks gives its metal and turns into its stone: iron ore gives 1 raw iron, gold ore 1 raw gold, copper ore 2 to 5 raw copper, nether gold ore 2 to 6 gold nuggets, gilded blackstone 2 to 5 gold nuggets, ancient debris 1 netherite scrap (and becomes netherrack). The ore becomes stone, deepslate, netherrack or blackstone, so nothing you could not see is shown by a hole. Raw-metal blocks come through the rock too.
  • Metal people built, only where you face. Metal blocks and fixtures (lanterns, rails, doors, chains, bars, hoppers, anvils, pistons...) come whole only if you can see them and they are in the cone you face (120 degrees): so your own base behind you stays where it is. Turn round to pull the rest. A door, a rail or a lantern comes as one item.
  • Loose metal. Dropped metal items and arrows stuck in the ground that you could pick up if you have room (what doesn't fit stays where it lies), empty minecarts, and falling or loose lifted metal blocks, from all round you.
  • Hostile creatures lose their metal gear: every metal armor piece and weapon is torn off and flies to you. A Horseman's iron crumbles instead (they are never farmed), and a copy of Loki dissolves.
  • A player, with PvP on only, if you can see him: one metal piece of his, the main hand first, flies into your inventory (or his nanites scatter, if he is the Iron Spider, or you tug him if his body is metal). Then he is left alone by your pulls for 10 seconds. A server option (magneto.pullPlayerGearToFeet) makes the piece drop at his feet instead.
  • Metal bodies (Iron Golems, Vision, the Ultron hero, the Vision of a Hex) are tugged toward you, unhurt.
  • It costs half a drumstick of hunger and takes 5 seconds to recharge, but only if it did something: a pull that finds nothing is free (and another press within half a second does nothing). It takes at most 64 things, the nearest first, 2 every tick, and it never loads a chunk. The HUD shows pull 4.9s on R's line while it recharges.
  • It does nothing in the second after you let go of something, or while you ride.

What the pull leaves alone, and why:

It leaves alone Why
What is inside chests, barrels and shulker boxes, and what is in item frames and armor stands It belongs to someone: a sibling's chest. A server can set magneto.pullFromStorage to let the pull take the metal stacks out of containers, frames and stands you can see (the container, frame or stand stays, and a villager's block never).
A block or minecart that holds things (a hopper with items, a chest minecart with items) Empty it first, then it comes. An empty one comes whole.
A piston that is extended or powered It is a working machine.
A villager's work block (a blacksmith's blast furnace, a mason's stonecutter, a bell that is their meeting point) A villager works there.
Other players' pets, a boss's creatures, a fight's Sentries They are not yours.
Anything in the arena of a running boss fight, and the island of Sokovia The world must be the same when the fight ends.
Claims and spawn protection (and Adventure mode, for blocks) They belong to the owner. A claim probe is made for each part of the world.
Mjolnir, and the heroes' own gear It answers only to a worthy hand.
The block under your own feet You never pull the floor from under yourself.
Another player's stuck trident, a frame's fixed item, an armor stand's locked slot Not yours to pick up.

2. Iron Shrapnel Storm

  • Needs iron in the inventory. Shards are paid for from an internal iron charge. When the charge runs out, one more iron item is melted into shards. Plain iron is used first, smallest first, and tools and armor only when no plain iron is left:

    Item Shards
    Iron Nugget 1
    Iron Ingot, Raw Iron 9
Block of Iron, Block of Raw Iron 81
Iron tools, weapons and armor (and other items tagged enhanced:shrapnel_ammo) 18

Enchanted items are never melted, so a Mending pickaxe is safe.

  • Each shard does 4 damage, pierces through up to 3 targets and ignores the normal hit cooldown, so the full stream deals about 40 damage per second before armor.

  • Creative players need no iron. The HUD shows how many shards you have stored.

3. Armor & Weapon Strip

  • Works on zombies, skeletons, piglins and every other creature, up to 32 blocks away. On players only with PvP on (never a teammate or a Creative player; otherwise it says why).
  • Rips off every metal item in a hand or armor slot: now also copper and netherite, shields, crossbows, tridents, Stormbreaker, shears, flint & steel, metal horse armor. The items fly out and land on the ground as normal items (a player's piece drops at his feet).
  • If the metal is the body itself (a golem, a Sentry, Vision, Ultron) it says so: lift it with R instead.
  • A copy of Loki dissolves: there is no real metal on it. What a creature never drops (the Horsemen's iron) crumbles instead of falling.
  • On Thanos it wrenches off one plate of his gold armor (at most once in 6 seconds, like a slam; never while he arrives or dies).
  • Cooldown: 3 seconds.

4. Magnetic Shield

  • Toggle on and off. While it is on it works automatically.
  • Metal projectiles (arrows, spectral arrows, crossbow bolts, tridents and other Magnetos' shrapnel) coming at Magneto are caught in mid-air about 4.5 blocks out, like the bullets and missiles he stops in the X-Men films. Each one hangs there, trembling, for almost a second, while Magneto's hand points at it. Then it either drops to the floor or flies straight back at whoever shot it (50/50 by default).
  • You can see the field while it is on: faint, colourless field lines loop around him like iron filings round a magnet, and every caught projectile shimmers with a ring and a line of force to his hand.
  • A metal projectile that would hit Magneto while the shield is on never deals damage.
  • It does not stop fireballs, potions or snowballs, because they are not metal.

5. Magnetic Flight

  • Survival flight, steady and fully controllable. You can also double-tap Space.
  • Flying speed is 0.075 (Creative is 0.05), a bit slower than Wanda's 0.09.

Magneto and Wolverine (3.7)

Wolverine's bones are adamantium: Magneto's Metal Telekinesis and Magnetic Pull take hold of him as they would of any metal (as in X-Men, 2000), so Magneto can lift him, hold him and throw him (a player only with PvP on). His claws are his bones, not gear: Armor & Weapon Strip can't take them.

Numbers you can change

Server owners can change Magneto's flight speed, telekinesis range, throw speed, shrapnel damage, piercing and fire rate, the strip's range and cooldown, the shield's reflect chance, how far and how hard a metal block R tears out, and every number of the Magnetic Pull: its radius, how many things it takes and how fast, its recharge and hunger, the cone, and whether it takes from storage and from players. They are the magneto.* options on Server Configuration. Which items and blocks count as metal is decided by datapack tags, described there too. Build Magic's build_magic.allArenasProtected and build_magic.hexIsAClaim also decide where the pull may work.
