Thor

The God of Thunder. "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor." Thor throws Mjolnir and calls it back, flies by spinning it, fires lightning from his hand (twice as strong through Mjolnir, stronger still through Stormbreaker), shatters Mjolnir into fragments that strike his enemies, and opens the Bifrost to take himself, or anyone who holds his weapons, anywhere in any dimension. With Mjolnir he can also pin someone down.

Thor's lightning

The quick version

Three tricks, in plain words. (Sneak is the Shift key, unless you changed it. Everyone nearby sees all three.)

  • Hold V: shoot lightning. A beam of lightning shoots out of your hand and hits whatever you are looking at, for as long as you keep the key down. Let go and it stops. Hold Mjolnir or Stormbreaker and it shoots out of the weapon instead, flies twice as far and hits twice as hard (through Stormbreaker, a fifth more still). Turn on the God of Thunder (B) and it hits harder still. It uses up a little food, so you need something in your hunger bar.
  • Sneak + R with Mjolnir: shatter it. Mjolnir bursts into glowing pieces. Each piece flies at one enemy near you, hits it and flies back. When the last piece is home, Mjolnir is whole in your hand again (at the latest after 10 seconds). With nobody near, the pieces fly out in a ring and come straight back. Then wait 15 seconds before you do it again. Stormbreaker doesn't shatter.
  • Sneak + right-click a creature or player with Mjolnir: pin them down. You put Mjolnir on their chest and they are stuck: they can't walk, jump, fly or teleport, but they can still look around. To let them go, right-click them again (without Sneak). Only Mjolnir's owner can pin someone, and only its owner can lift it off again. It lets go by itself after a minute. The big bosses can't be pinned.

Mjolnir

Thor at the Shrine of Eternity

Forging Mjolnir. "Forged in the heart of a dying star, from the sacred metal of Uru":

N S N
N H N
. R .

N = Netherite Ingot (Uru)
S = Nether Star (the heart of a dying star)
H = Heavy Core
R = Breeze Rod (the handle)

Or find it where it fell (3.3). In deserts, badlands, savannas and plains, a crater of burnt rock and scorched earth, as in New Mexico in Thor, holds a Mjolnir in its middle, lying handle up, owned by nobody. The first worthy player who right-clicks it lifts it and claims it; anyone else gets "It won't budge". /locate structure enhanced:mjolnir_crater finds the nearest.

Mjolnir hits hard (10 attack damage, slow like an axe), never breaks, and fire and lava can't destroy it. Speedsters can't snatch it and telekinesis can't lift it, not even Magneto's.

The worthy

Only the worthy can lift a Mjolnir nobody owns yet:

  • Thor himself,
  • Vision, who lifted it in Age of Ultron,
  • (3.8) Captain America, who lifted it in Endgame, and Love, Thor's daughter (a server can take it from them: captain_america.worthy, love.worthy; a custom hero with their bodies is worthy too),
  • anyone who has proven themselves a hero by saving a village from a raid (the Hero of the Village advancement),
  • players in Creative or Spectator mode,
  • or everyone, if the server option thor.anyoneWorthy is turned on.

Mjolnir is bound to its owner

  • A Mjolnir nobody has claimed yet (a freshly forged one, or one from the Creative tab) belongs to nobody. The first worthy player to lift it claims it, for good: when it comes into their inventory or hand, when they lift it off the ground, when they forge it, or when Thor calls it to himself. "Mjolnir is yours now: only you can lift it." From then on, only its owner can lift it: not another Hero of the Village, not Vision, not another Thor.
  • The tooltip says "Bound to" followed by the owner's name, or "Unclaimed: the first worthy hand to lift it claims it" until someone claims it.
  • Anyone else finds it far too heavy: in their inventory it slips out of their hands and falls at their feet ("Mjolnir slips from your grasp: only Steve can lift it", with the owner's name). They can't pick it up, and where it rests as a block it won't budge for them ("It won't budge. Only Steve can lift it.").
  • Thor's recall never takes someone else's Mjolnir, wherever it is. He calls his own, a Mjolnir nobody owns yet (he claims it when it reaches him), or Stormbreaker.
  • Creative and Spectator players can still lift any Mjolnir, so an operator can move one, but holding someone else's never changes its owner. A Creative player who lifts a Mjolnir that nobody owns claims it like any other worthy player; a Spectator never does.
  • Stormbreaker is not affected. Anyone can wield it.
  • A server can turn ownership off with thor.mjolnirOwnerOnly (on by default). With it off, Mjolnirs are never claimed: any worthy player can lift any Mjolnir. See Server Configuration.
Who A Mjolnir nobody owns A Mjolnir bound to someone else
A worthy player Lifts it and becomes its owner Can't lift it
A player who is not worthy Can't lift it (it slips away unclaimed) Can't lift it
A Creative player Lifts it and becomes its owner, like any worthy player Lifts it, and it stays its owner's

Where Mjolnir rests

A dropped Mjolnir lands and stands on its head, handle up, like in the crater in New Mexico: a block that nothing can break, blow up or push, and that remembers whose it is. It never despawns before it lands. Only its owner can lift it again (right-click). Thor can set it down himself with Sneak + right-click on a block.

Becoming Thor

The first time a worthy player with no other power lifts (and so claims) a Mjolnir nobody owned, or lifts their own, lightning strikes and they become Thor. Vision can claim it and fight with it, but stays Vision.

Shattering Mjolnir

From Thor: Love and Thunder, where Jane's Mjolnir bursts into dozens of glowing fragments that each strike an enemy, then fly back and reassemble.

  • Sneak + R with Mjolnir in hand. Stormbreaker doesn't shatter: Sneak + R simply throws it, as R does.
  • Mjolnir bursts into glowing, crackling fragments: one for each enemy Thor can see within 16 blocks, the nearest 12 at most. Enemies are hostile monsters, and any creature or player that is going after him or has just hurt him. With nobody around, a ring of twelve bursts out and comes straight back. Players that PvP rules protect, and players in Creative or Spectator mode, are never targets.
  • Each fragment curves in on its enemy and strikes it for 6 damage, with knockback. With the God of Thunder unleashed, lightning arcs from every hit. Then the fragment flies back.
  • When the last fragment is home, Mjolnir is whole again in his hand, still bound to its owner (in his inventory if his hand is busy).
  • While it is in pieces Mjolnir is not in his hand, but it counts as a weapon in flight, so Thor keeps flying. R calls the fragments home at once.
  • Everyone nearby sees the fragments burst out and fly home, and Thor's arm throw them up and close round them. At the latest after 10 seconds the pieces are home by themselves.
  • If Thor dies, logs out, changes dimension or loses his power while it is in pieces, Mjolnir comes together where he was and falls to the ground, its owner kept. It is kept in Thor's own saved data while it is in pieces, so it can't be lost.
  • Cooldown: 15 seconds.

Pinning someone down

From The Avengers, where Thor sets Mjolnir on Loki's chest and Loki can't get up.

  • Sneak + right-click a creature or player with Mjolnir in hand. Only its owner can do it (or any worthy player, if thor.mjolnirOwnerOnly is off). Mjolnir is set down on them, lying across their chest.
  • While it lies there they can't move, jump, fly, swim up, ride, teleport (Ender Pearls, chorus fruit, Endermen, the Bifrost and the mod's other teleports and dashes) or glide on an elytra, and knockback doesn't move them and no telekinesis can lift them. They can still look around.
  • Everyone nearby sees Mjolnir lying on them, and Thor's arm bring it down.
  • Only its owner can lift it again: right-click the pinned creature or player, or call it back with R. Nobody else can, the pinned one included ("It won't budge. Only Steve can lift it.").
  • It lets go by itself after 60 seconds (thor.pinDuration), or when its owner logs out, dies or changes dimension, or when the pinned one dies or leaves. It then drops beside them, still its owner's.
  • The bosses can't be pinned: the Ender Dragon, the Wither and the Warden (the enhanced:pin_immune tag, see Server Configuration). A player can't be pinned if the server has PvP off, nor can one in Creative or Spectator mode.

Stormbreaker

Forged in Nidavellir in the heart of a dying star, its handle grown from Groot's arm:

N N
N S
. L

N = Netherite Ingot (Uru)
S = Nether Star (the dying star)
L = any log (Groot's arm)

Stormbreaker carries no enchantment of worthiness: anyone can wield it, and nobody owns it. It is an axe (it chops wood, strips logs and knocks shields aside) that hits harder than any other (12 attack damage), never breaks and can't burn. It doesn't make anyone Thor, but whoever holds it can call the Bifrost (below). In Thor's hands it does most of what Mjolnir does: he throws it, calls it back, flies with it and fires his lightning beam through it. (It doesn't shatter, and it can't pin anyone.) Unlike Mjolnir, a speedster can snatch it out of a hand. It is metal: Magneto can lift it, tear it from a hand, and pull it.

Stormbreaker in 3.8. It is Love's axe: she throws it and calls it back exactly as Thor does (with Thor's own throw), flies while she holds it and opens the Bifrost with it; wishing to become Love gives you one if you carry none. And it is the best-known key of the Bifrost for Eternity's altar in the End (Mjolnir, Hofund and your own Gungnir open it too): hold it, right-click the altar, and it floats over it for 3 seconds before you are taken to Eternity's realm. Since anyone can forge and hold Stormbreaker, anyone can reach Eternity.

Mjolnir or Stormbreaker?

In the films the axe hit a bit harder than the hammer, and so it does here: Stormbreaker is a fifth stronger than Mjolnir in everything they share. What only Mjolnir can do stays Mjolnir's.

Mjolnir Stormbreaker
Who can wield it only the worthy, and only its owner anyone
A blow in your hand 10 damage (5 hearts) 12 damage (6 hearts)
Thrown (both ways) 10 damage 12 damage
Lightning beam, each hit 4 damage (2 hearts) 4.8 damage
With the God of Thunder 6 damage 7.2 damage
Lightning beam, how far 48 blocks 58 blocks
The Chaos Shield pays for the beam the beam's damage the beam's damage (a fifth more)
Shatter into fragments (Sneak + R) yes no
Pin someone down (Sneak + right-click) yes no
Throw, call back, flight, the Bifrost yes yes (the same speed, range and cooldown)
A speedster can snatch it no yes
How big it looks in the hand the head is about as long as Thor's head is wide a big axe with a long handle, taller than the hammer

Both are drawn big, as in the films, wherever you see them: in Thor's fist, in first person, thrown, set down on the ground, lying on someone it pins, and as a dropped item. Every number in the table is a server option (the thor.* options on Server Configuration).

The Asgardian body

Thor in flight, second look

Thor in flight, third look

  • Max health 30 (15 hearts), 6 armor, half knockback.
  • Lightning never hurts or burns Thor. With Mjolnir or Stormbreaker in hand he takes no fall damage.

Abilities

Thor in flight

# Key Ability How it works
1 R Throw / Call Back With Mjolnir or Stormbreaker in hand: throw it. It flies straight, tumbling, smashing everything in its path (Mjolnir 10 damage, Stormbreaker 12, and heavy knockback), until it hits a wall or has flown 40 blocks, then turns back and flies home to his hand, straight through walls, hitting everything on the way back too. With neither in hand: call the nearest one back, from his inventory, the air, the ground anywhere within 64 blocks (dropped, or Mjolnir resting as a block), or the hands of a creature that picked it up, or off someone it pins down (never from another player's hands, and never another player's Mjolnir: he calls his own, one nobody owns yet, or Stormbreaker). Sneak + R with Mjolnir in hand: it shatters into fragments that strike his enemies (see above).
2 G (toggle) Flight Thor flies by spinning his weapon: only with Mjolnir or Stormbreaker in hand (or while it flies back to him). Fast: 0.11. Hovering, he holds it up to the sky; at speed it leads the way. You can also double-tap Space.
3 V (hold) Lightning Beam While he holds V, a crackling beam of lightning pours from his hand, or from the head of the weapon in it (the one in his main hand, if he holds two), to what he looks at, for everyone nearby to see: a white-hot core, electric blue and a deep blue halo, jagged and flickering. Every 5 ticks it hits the first creature in the line (not through walls): bare-handed, 2 damage (one heart) up to 24 blocks away (8 damage a second). With Mjolnir in hand it reaches 48 blocks and hits twice as hard (4 damage); with Stormbreaker, a fifth more of both (58 blocks, 4.8 damage). Through either the beam is thicker and brighter, and the first time it hits each creature it also has the usual effects of lightning on it (creepers become charged, pigs turn into zombified piglins, villagers into witches). The God of Thunder on top hits 1.5 times as hard, and every hit arcs to the next two creatures nearby. It burns a little hunger while he fires it (with an empty hunger bar it stops, and it won't start), and sparks fly where it ends (no fire, no block damage). A Scarlet Witch's complete Chaos Shield stops it at its surface and loses the beam's damage from its strength.
4 B (toggle) God of Thunder From Thor: Ragnarok: his eyes blaze white-blue and lightning crawls over his body. +4 attack damage, +6 armor toughness, every blow he lands arcs lightning to the next two creatures nearby (4 damage each), a thrown weapon and every fragment of a shattered Mjolnir arc too, and the lightning beam hits 1.5 times as hard. It burns hunger; with an empty hunger bar the thunder calms.
5 N Bifrost "Heimdall! Open the Bifrost!" With Mjolnir or Stormbreaker in hand: N opens the Bifrost screen (Asgard, home, his saved places, save this one), Sneak + N takes him to the spot he looks at, up to 512 blocks away. Everyone in its circle goes with him.

All of Thor's lightning is the MCU's: a white-hot core, electric blue and a deep blue halo.

The Bifrost and its saved places

The Bifrost bridge

  • The Bifrost answers the weapon, not the power. Thor calls it with N. Anyone else holding Mjolnir or Stormbreaker calls it by using the weapon (right-click). With neither in hand it doesn't come. Since 3.5 it answers Hofund (anyone's), the owner of a Gungnir, and the heroes Heimdall and Odin too: see Asgard.
  • The Bifrost screen shows:
    • Asgard (3.5), at the top, while you are outside it: the Bifrost always lands in Heimdall's Observatory. It is the only way to Asgard;
    • Home: the respawn point (bed or respawn anchor, otherwise the world spawn), in whatever dimension it is (in Asgard it is called Home (Midgard));
    • every saved place, with how far away it is, or which world it is in (the Overworld, the Nether, the End, or a dimension added by another mod). The X button forgets one;
    • a field to save the place you stand on, under a name of up to 32 characters, facing the way you face. Saving a name again moves that place. You can save up to 24 places.
  • Sneak + N (or Sneak + right-click with the weapon) takes you to the spot you look at, up to 512 blocks away. (Aimed at a creature or player, Sneak + right-click with Mjolnir pins them instead: see above.)
  • Any dimension. A column of swirling rainbow light gathers around the traveller for a second and a half, holding them in place, then takes them, across dimensions if need be. They land exactly on the saved spot, facing the saved way. If it has been built over since, they land on the first free spot above it. The Bifrost burns its circle of runes into the ground where it lands and where it left, glowing gold and fading over a minute.
  • Everyone in the circle goes too (3.5). The Bifrost no longer takes only the one who opened it: every player and creature whose feet are inside its circle of runes (3.2 blocks) goes along, pets, horses with their riders, dropped items, boats and minecarts included, and lands in the same place round him. Bosses, the creatures of a boss fight, someone pinned down and anyone a gate turns back stay. Sneaking doesn't keep you out (unless the server turns on bifrost.sneakToStay): step out of the circle to stay. A server can change the circle (bifrost.groupRadius; 0 = only the opener, as before). Only the opener pays the cooldown. See Asgard.
  • Arriving inside a Hex counts as crossing its wall: the Hex judges the traveller as it judges everyone else.
  • Cooldown: 60 seconds, the same for everyone, shown on the screen (and on Thor's HUD). A rune stone or Heimdall in the Observatory sends you with no cooldown of your own.
  • The places and the cooldown are saved with the player and kept on death, and only that player sees them.

Looks

Thor (2011 and The Avengers: black and silver armour with the six chest discs, red cape), Ragnarok (the God of Thunder at the end of the film: short hair, eyepatch), Love and Thunder (navy, gold and black armour, bare arms, long ash-blond hair swept back, a full beard, red cape), Love and Thunder, helmet (the same suit with the winged helmet of the New Asgard fight), Mighty Thor (Jane Foster), and Your own skin. Press H to switch. See Looks.

Thor and the heroes of 3.8

  • Love, his daughter, has his throw, his flight with the axe, his lightning beam (in lilac and gold) and his Bifrost, with Stormbreaker.
  • Thor's lightning on an Iron Man in a Mark 85 charges its Lightning Refocuser (free and stronger for 10 seconds). Red Hulk's Energy Absorb soaks up his lightning beam into anger.
  • Captain America and Love are worthy: they can lift a Mjolnir nobody owns, and claim it.

The Infinity Stones (3.6)

Thor is a god: he may hold every Infinity Stone bare, take them from their pedestals, open the Orb, and use them (right-click; Sneak + right-click for the second power). He may wield a crafted Infinity Gauntlet with stones in it, and Snap. Only the Time Stone stays quiet in his hand: it answers only a sorcerer. As a god he may also seek the Soul Stone at Vormir.

Numbers you can change

Thor's flight speed, who is worthy of Mjolnir, whether Mjolnir is bound to its owner, the throw damage (Mjolnir and Stormbreaker), the throw range and recall range, the lightning beam's damage, range, how often it hits and hunger cost (and how much stronger it is with each weapon and as the God of Thunder), the cooldown of shattering Mjolnir and the damage of its fragments, how long Mjolnir pins someone down, the hunger cost of the God of Thunder and the Bifrost's cooldown are the thor.* options on Server Configuration. Who travels with the Bifrost (3.5) is bifrost.groupRadius and bifrost.sneakToStay: see the Bifrost.
