Quicksilver

Peter Maximoff, the fastest man alive, as in the X-Men films: everything around him slows down, he speeds up, and the world starts playing his song (since 3.5 his own theme, Silver Hours; or your own copy of Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)). Or he can just be fast himself, and leave the world alone.

Quicksilver at the Mutant School

Becoming Quicksilver

Craft Quicksilver's Goggles and put them on. Like Magneto's Helmet, the first time you wear them you become Quicksilver for good, if you have no other power.

S I S
G D G

S = Sugar
I = Iron Ingot
G = Glass Pane
D = Block of Diamond

While he wears the goggles, Quicksilver's skin becomes Peter Maximoff's outfit from the movies: silver hair, a shiny silver jacket over a grey T-shirt, headphones and jeans. The goggles protect like an iron helmet and never break.

Two powers, two keys (3.3)

In 3.3 Quicksilver's two powers are separate: R slows time, G makes him run. Use either one alone, or both together.

You want Press
The world slowed, his song playing, and you at your normal pace R (Quicksilver Time)
Only you fast, the world as usual G (Super Speed), then sprint
The X-Men kitchen scene: the world slowed and you running through it R and G, then sprint

Quicksilver Time (R)

Super speed

Press R and time slows down around him, whether he runs or not. He can stand still, walk, mine, build, fight or eat in the middle of it.

  • Everything within 32 blocks runs 5 times slower: monsters, animals, villagers, falling blocks, TNT fuses, dropped items, smoke, sparks and splashes, and arrows and thrown things, which hang in the air and crawl forward. An arrow that finally lands still hits as hard as it would have.
  • Other players in range are slowed down heavily (a strong Slowness).
  • The world starts playing his song. Everyone near him hears his theme, Silver Hours (3.5; or your own Sweet Dreams, see below), from his Walkman for as long as Quicksilver Time is on (if his Walkman is on: Sneak + R). It fades in when he turns Quicksilver Time on, keeps playing from where it was if he turns it off and on again within 10 seconds, and fades out when he turns it off.
  • A cool grey-blue shade at the edges of the screen, and a tint of the world, show that time is slowed; everyone inside his zone sees it. (Inside Tommy's slow time it is teal.)
  • Cost: hunger, at half the rate of running while he does not run. When the hunger bar is empty, Quicksilver Time switches itself off (with a message) and can't be switched on again until he has eaten. Creative players never run out.

Super Speed (G)

Press G and he runs. With Super Speed on, sprinting is super speed:

  • He runs 4 times faster than normal, steps up whole blocks without jumping, and takes no fall damage while running. Walking, he moves at his normal speed, so he can still do precise work.
  • He leaves a grey blur and fading afterimages behind him (in the X-Men films his speed has no coloured glow).
  • With Wall & Water Run on (B) he runs across water and up walls and along ceilings: see below.
  • Cost: hunger only while he runs, at the full rate (running inside his own Quicksilver Time costs the same, not more). With an empty hunger bar he can't run, but Super Speed stays on.
  • Quicksilver Time and Super Speed start off, and both are saved with the player.

Doing everything faster

While Quicksilver Time or Super Speed (or both) is on, Quicksilver does everything 4 times as fast, whether he runs or not:

What How it is faster
Mining His block break speed is multiplied by 4: stone with a pickaxe takes a quarter of the time.
Attacking His attack speed is multiplied by 4, so the attack cooldown recharges 4 times faster.
Eating, drinking, bows, crossbows and everything else you hold the use button for The use runs 4 times as fast: a steak takes 8 ticks instead of 32, a bow is fully drawn in 5 ticks instead of 20, a crossbow is loaded in 7 instead of 25. Food is still eaten and arrows still fly at full strength. (A spyglass, a brush and a goat horn keep their own pace: there is nothing in them to wait for.)
Swimming His swim speed is multiplied by 4.
Placing and breaking blocks one after another On his own screen, the game's built-in pause between one block and the next (after a right click, and after a block is broken) is cut by the same factor, so holding the button places or breaks blocks without waiting.

The movement speed bonus and the step-up still need sprinting, so he can still walk normally and precisely.

Abilities

# Key Ability How it works
1 R (toggle) Quicksilver Time (Sneak: Walkman) The world around him slows down, whether he runs or not (above). Off by default. Sneak + R turns the Walkman, his theme music, on or off.
2 G (toggle) Super Speed (Sneak: Dash Strike) Sprinting is super speed (above). Off by default. Sneak + G is the Dash Strike: in a blink he dashes up to 12 blocks along his look, never into a block (he stops at the first wall), and everything in his path takes 5 damage and is knocked aside. Cooldown 5 seconds.
3 V Speed Blitz (Sneak: Pickpocket) Look at a creature up to 24 blocks away: Quicksilver is next to it in an instant and lands 6 rapid punches (2 damage each, ignoring the hit cooldown), then knocks it back. Cooldown 4 seconds. Sneak + V is the Pickpocket: snatch whatever the creature or player you look at (up to 24 blocks) holds in its hand, straight into your inventory (cooldown 5 seconds, on the same key).
4 B (toggle) Wall & Water Run While he runs at super speed: across water, up walls and along ceilings (below).
5 N Pebble Barrage He scoops up a handful of pebbles and flings them at super speed: 8 pebbles in a narrow cone, up to 24 blocks, 1.5 damage each, and they add up (no hit cooldown between them). Grey streaks show their paths. Cooldown 6 seconds.

The Dash Strike and the Pebble Barrage hurt players only with PvP on, and do not cross a Hex wall.

Running up walls and across ceilings

A speed run across the map

A speed run at sunset

The speedster way, not the spider's: he does not cling, he runs, and only as long as he is fast. (3.3, Quicksilver and Tommy.)

  • Start: with super speed on, sprint into a wall (holding W towards it). He runs straight up it. Quicksilver needs Wall & Water Run on (B); Tommy's Wall & Water Run is on from the start (Sneak + R switches it; since 3.6.1 it takes him across water too).
  • At the top he hops over onto the roof. Under a ceiling or an overhang he runs on along the ceiling, upside down, the way he looks; a wall ahead turns him down it to the floor, and the edge of an overhang takes him round its lip and up its outer face. The camera turns round smoothly so that W keeps meaning "on".
  • Keep going: hold W and keep sprinting. On a wall or a ceiling he runs at four fifths of his ground speed. Let go of W, lose the sprint or run out of food and he slows down; too slow, he drops off (pushed a little away from the surface). A hole in the ceiling or the end of a wall in mid-air drops him too. Space leaps off.
  • Safe: he never goes inside a block (his body keeps its size and every move is checked like a normal one), and he takes no fall damage after a wall or ceiling run until he lands. The server keeps him from being kicked for flying.
  • Everyone sees it: his body turns with his feet on the surface (horizontal on a wall, upside down on a ceiling), the run cycle keeps going, and the blur and afterimages follow him in his colours. On his own screen, speed lines (off with the client option Flight effects), and the HUD says on the wall or on the ceiling.

The song and your own music

Since 3.5 the Walkman plays his own theme, Silver Hours: an original 80s synth-pop song written for the mod, in the spirit of songs like Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (the style only: no melody, bass line or chords are taken from it).

  • Want Sweet Dreams? Since 3.8.4 Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by Eurythmics is no longer built into the mod. Put your own copy in config/enhanced/music/ as sweet_dreams.mp3 (or .ogg or .wav) and set the client option quicksilverSong to sweet_dreams (in config/enhanced-client.toml, section [music], or in Mods → Enhanced → Config). It changes only your own game. Without the file he plays Silver Hours, and the game tells you once where to put it.
  • Your own song: put an .mp3, .ogg or .wav file in config/enhanced/music/ in your Minecraft folder (the mod makes the folder, with a short README.txt). A file named quicksilver.* is his; otherwise any song there is his, the first in alphabetical order. Your own song is played only by your own game. Remove it to go back.
  • A server's song: a server can give every player another song for him, quicksilver.ogg in the world's music folder, and players download it by themselves (3.5).
  • Which one plays: your own song first (your sweet_dreams.* before any other if you chose it), then the world's, then his theme.

All of it, and Speed's Walkman, is on Music.

Numbers you can change

How many times slower the world runs (5), how far time slows (32 blocks), Quicksilver's speed bonus (3.0, which is four times as fast), how many times as fast he does everything else (actionSpeed, 4) and the hunger cost are the quicksilver.* options on Server Configuration. Wall and ceiling running (on or off, speed on a surface, the slowest speed that holds), the Dash Strike and the Pebble Barrage are the speedsters.* options, shared with Tommy: see Server Configuration.
