Under certain (rare) circumstances, the simdata status thread can become stuck during initialization. In this state, simdata will become unresponsive.

mark I'm not sure whether this has ever occurred in the wild, but I have seen it while testing with a slow box running a big sim. If the sim gets bogged down, it can fail to respond to messages. If this failure occurs after the status thread has connected, but before the status thread has received an initial shot of data, the status thread can end up in a waiting state, looking for information from the sim that it will never receive.
