Training: Add a Custom Field

What you'll learn: how to extend a data model with a custom field — without changing the model definition. You need: Administrator access type, any application. Time: 5 minutes.

Steps

  1. Go to Left menu → Data Management → Custom Fields. (Fallback: header Search "Custom Fields".) Custom fields
  2. Click +. The Create a new Data Model Custom Field dialog opens. Create custom field
  3. Pick one or more Data Models the field is added to.
  4. Pick the Data Model Custom Field Type: Date, Date & Time, Decimal, Integer, Markdown, Text, Time, or True/False — each option shows a description. Field types
  5. Type the Label (shown to users) and the API Field Name (used in the API).
  6. (Optional) Type a Group Label to group related custom fields on forms.
  7. Type a Description.
  8. Leave Show On Tables and Show On Forms checked so the field appears in the UI.
  9. Click the orange + to create.

Check your work

The field is listed in the Custom Fields table with its model, type, and Show On flags. Open a record of that model: the field appears on the form (and as a column on tables).

Try it yourself

Add a Text custom field labeled TRAINING Note to a test model, verify it shows on the form, then delete it from the Custom Fields table.
