Training: Create a Role

What you'll learn: how to create a role in an application — the first step before inviting users. You need: Administrator access type, any application. Time: 3 minutes.

Before you start

A brand-new application has no roles, and you can't invite users until at least one exists. Roles do two jobs: they carry permissions (through attached policy groups) and they define the left menu users see.

Steps

  1. Go to Left menu → Access Control → Roles. (Can't see it? Type "Roles" in the header Search.)
  2. Click + in the toolbar. The Create a new Role dialog opens.
  3. Type the role Name (e.g. Operator). The role Id is generated from it.
  4. (Optional) Pick a Home Screen — the screen users with this role land on at login.
  5. Type a Description. Create role
  6. Click the orange +. A toast confirms "Role created successfully." Role created

Check your work

The Roles table shows your role with Attached Users 0 and Attached Policy Groups 0. Click its Name to open the detail page: the DETAILS tab has the Menu builder (what users with this role see in the left menu) and a read-only Effective Permissions view that fills in once you attach policy groups.
