Effects Between the Scales
A World Block is not a simple portal: it stays linked to what surrounds it, within 8 blocks. Where you plant a Seed or perform a rite matters. Effects only run while the block's chunk is loaded; what the surroundings send inside is stored, so it keeps working while you play in the world.
| World | Around its World Block |
|---|---|
| 1 | Spores drift up and nearby crops, saplings and grass grow faster |
| 2 | The block smokes: furnaces, smokers and blast furnaces nearby work a quarter faster, and now and then a flammable block catches fire |
| 3 | It creaks and slams the wooden doors around it shut |
| 4 | Gusts push the creatures and players around (sneak to resist) and charge the lightning rods nearby |
| 5 | It drinks the light: lit candles and campfires around it go out one by one |
| 6 | Items lying on the ground float up |
| 7 | It leaks: farmland around it stays soaked and fires go out |
| 8 | Crops grow faster, and food left lying on the ground spoils into Rotten Flesh |
| 9 | The ground trembles, shoves whoever stands on it and cracks stone, stone bricks and grass |
| 10 | None: you stand outside, in the giant world |
Whatever the world, a boss fight inside makes the block tremble and crack on the Surface, and its miniature shakes.
| World | What you do around the block | Effect inside |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 water blocks within 3 | The toxin rises half as fast for 5 minutes |
| 2 | 2 ice, packed ice, blue ice or snow blocks within 3 | The heat rises half as fast for 5 minutes |
| 3 | A redstone signal on the block | Sealed doors open by hand, without a key, for 1 minute |
| 4 | Rain or a thunderstorm over the block | The gusts are half again as strong |
| 5 | 4 light sources (light 10 or more) within 5 | A lit Solar Lantern gets 5 more minutes (once every 5 minutes) |
| 7 | No water within 6 | The pressure limit is 16 blocks deeper for 5 minutes |
| 9 | A Terrain Anchor within 8 | The ground holds still for 5 minutes |
Moving a World Block (setting a Cracked Doll down elsewhere, or an administrator's /matriochka world move) makes the world inside quake for ten seconds.
A player of the group that owns a World Block, standing outside, can shake it on purpose for those of the group inside:
| How | Effect inside |
|---|---|
| Sneak and use the block with empty hands: help | Around every member of the group inside, the creatures within 24 blocks are thrown off their feet and stunned (slowed and weakened) for 3 seconds, and an awake boss staggers, its guard open as after an attack, for 3 seconds |
| Strike it with a Doll Mallet: hinder | The world quakes for 5 seconds: the players of the group inside are shaken about (as when the block is moved) and loose blocks over their heads come down |
- One shake per world every 30 seconds, whoever shakes it. The players inside read who shook their world and why.
- Only the owning group can shake its blocks; other groups cannot. Shaking an empty world does nothing.
- The Doll Mallet is made at the Matrix Workbench from 3 Painted Wood and 2 sticks, once the Block Guardian is beaten.
- A boss fight inside still makes the block tremble on its own, as above; a trembling World Block nearby shakes the camera (see Accessibility to soften it).
Every World Block shows a small turning island of its world above it: its surface and ground blocks, a little sun of its light block in its sky colour, a rock lid over the ceiling worlds and water over the ocean. Calm and hallowed worlds look greener, wild and cursed ones redder.
