Matriochka slows down vanilla shortcuts so that each world stays meaningful. The gates are tied to your group's defeated bosses. This page lists each gate, how the code enforces it and whether the config can turn it off.
| Content | Unlocked after | How it is enforced | Controlled by progressionGates
|
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamonds | World 5 | Diamond ore features are removed from overworld generation and diamonds from vanilla loot chests. Diamonds come from 4 Diamond Fragments (World 5 ore) at the Dark Altar | No, always on |
| Villager diamond trades | World 5 boss | Villager offers that involve diamonds (diamonds, diamond tools and armor) are put aside, and come back as soon as a player whose group has beaten World 5 trades with that villager | Yes |
| Enchanting and anvils | World 2 boss | Using an enchanting table or any anvil fails with "The runes stay silent. Finish World 2 first." | Yes |
| The Nether | World 2 boss | Entering the Nether sends you back to the overworld spawn with "The portal rejects you. The Nether opens after World 2." | Yes |
| The End | World 8 boss | Same as the Nether: "The End opens after World 8." | Yes |
| Elytra | World 8 boss | Elytra flight stops at once in worlds 4, 6 and 9 | No, always on |
| Beds | Never | Beds cannot be slept in or set your spawn in any of the ten worlds ("Beds do not work inside a world. Use a Soul Cradle."). Respawn anchors do not work in the roofed worlds | No (dimension data) |
| Seeds and rite objects | Previous boss | A Seed can only be planted, or a rite object set down, if your group beat the previous boss | Always |
| Station recipes | Listed per recipe | Locked recipes are hidden in the station screen | Always |
| Class levels | Worlds 2, 4, 6, 8 | Class Table refuses upgrades past your cap | Always |
Creative players bypass the enchanting, Nether, End, recipe and class gates.
- Iron is the top vanilla material before World 5; netherite still requires diamonds, so it follows naturally.
- Karma also changes villager prices and reactions on the Surface (see Souls and karma).
- Existing diamond ore in chunks generated before the mod was installed stays in place.
