Multiplayer and groups

Matriochka plays the same in singleplayer and on servers. Progression belongs to a group: a Seed or rite opens a world for the whole group, and a boss beaten by the group stays beaten for everyone in it.

Groups

  • Every player starts in a group of one, and leads it.
  • Up to 8 players per group by default (the config value maxGroupSize).
  • A group shares: defeated bosses, unlocked recipes and the ways into the worlds, world parcels and World Blocks, world variants, the Refuge Doll room, the cycle, class level caps and gates.
  • Each player keeps their own: souls, karma, Doll of Life layers, quests, achievements, Journal pages, endings, Soul Cradles, inventory.

Commands

Command Who Effect
/matriochka group info anyone Members, leader, bosses beaten (as a bit field, bit 0 = Block Guardian)
/matriochka group leader anyone Who leads
/matriochka group invite <player> leader Invites a player
/matriochka group join invited Joins the inviting group, if it is not full
/matriochka group leave anyone Back to a group of one
/matriochka group kick <player> leader Sends a member out
/matriochka group transfer <player> leader Hands over the lead
/matriochka group disband leader Dissolves the group
  • When the leader leaves, the oldest member leads.
  • A player who leaves or is kicked keeps their gear, quests and achievements, but loses the group's worlds and refuge: if they stand in one, they are sent out. They get a refuge room of their own.
  • A disbanded group's worlds are kept for 30 days, then an administrator may reset them (/matriochka world list shows which). See Commands.

What joining or leaving does

  • Joining moves you into the other group: you now use its progression, its parcels and its World Blocks. Your own souls, karma, doll and quests come with you. If you stand in your old group's world, you are sent out.
  • Leaving sends you back to your personal group, with whatever progression that personal group had before. You keep your items.
  • World Blocks check the group of their owner. A player from another group cannot use your World Block (creative players can).

Bosses in multiplayer

Players Boss health Attack speed
1 x1 x1
2 x1.6 x1.05
4 x2.8 x1.15
8 x5.2 x1.35
  • Health is multiplied by 1 + 0.6 x (players - 1), counting the players within 48 blocks when the boss wakes.
  • Attack speed is multiplied by 1 + 0.05 x (players - 1), recounted during the fight from the players within 48 blocks.
  • Every player within 64 blocks when the boss dies gets the kill, 100 souls, 3 Shell Shards, the doll layer and marks the boss as defeated for their own group. Players from different groups can fight together and all progress.

Taking part in the last boss

World progression belongs to the group, but the gear of the group's newest world can only be crafted by players who took part in its last boss fight (being near the boss at any time during the fight counts, even if you fell before the end). Older gear stays open to everyone. A newcomer earns it at the next fight: lairs re-arm, offerings can be made again.

Trials, events and the leaderboard

  • A trial is fought by whoever starts it and the members of their group within 24 blocks. Best times are kept per player and per group, and the server keeps a board of the ten best groups per trial (/matriochka trials top <trial>), with the names of who fought.
  • World events grow with the players around: an invasion sends 2 more creatures per player, and its reward souls go to everyone near.
  • A player of the group outside can shake its World Block to help or hinder those inside (see Effects between the scales). Other groups cannot.
  • maxActiveGroups and maxParcels in config/matriochka.json can cap how many groups hold worlds on a server (see Configuration).

Parcels

Each group gets its own 3000 x 3000 block parcel in each of the ten worlds, so two groups never meet inside a world. The parcel of a group has the same index in every world.

Inside and outside

A player can stay outside to watch the World Block while friends explore inside. The block shakes and cracks on the Surface while a boss fight rages inside, and what the outside player does around it (water, ice, redstone, lights, a Terrain Anchor) softens or strengthens the rule inside. Moving the block makes the world inside quake. See Effects between the scales.
