Nesting Systems

Something always holds something else. These systems unlock along the story. The ten hidden dolls nest too.

System Effect Unlock
Doll of Life Each layer survives one death Worlds 1, 5 and 8
Nesting Chests A chest holds a smaller one, with sorting rules World 2
Nesting Creatures A defeated creature releases a smaller one (see the Bestiary) World 2
Refuge Doll A pocket base for the group (see Refuge Doll) World 3
Layered Armor A layer protects the next World 4

Nesting Chests

Three sizes, all crafted at the Matrix Workbench after World 2:

Chest Rows Recipe
Nesting Chest 3 2 Chests, 2 Ash Ingots
Middle Nesting Chest 2 1 Chest, 1 Ash Ingot
Little Nesting Chest (x2) 1 1 Chest, 2 Wool Threads
  • A chest accepts only smaller nesting chests: a Little one fits in the two others, a Middle one only in the large one.
  • Broken, a nesting chest keeps its contents and its rule; placed again, everything is back.
  • Sorting rule: sneak and use a chest with an empty hand to cycle what it sorts: nothing, blocks, tools/weapons/armor, food, resources.
  • When you close a chest, every item matching the rule of a smaller chest inside it slides into that chest, and on down the nest.

Layered Armor

  • Lacquer Layers are crafted at the Lightning Forge (World 4): 1 Celestial Crystal, 1 Storm Essence, 2 Honeycomb give 2 layers.
  • Lay one on an armor piece at the Class Table ("Add a layer").
  • The outer layer takes the wear the armor would take. When it breaks, the next takes over, and the armor itself only wears once the last layer is gone. Each intact layer adds one armor point.
  • How many layers a piece holds depends on its class: 1, plus one at class level 3, plus one at level 5, plus one for Guardian gear (whose layers are also half as sturdy again).
  • The tooltip shows the layers and how worn the outer one is.
