ThimbleStools
"A thimble of rain for the smallest guest."
-- A KnitWitch saying
ThimbleStools are tiny toadstools whose caps are shaped exactly like thimbles, holes, dents and all, and turned up to the sky. They pop up in the damp corners of gardens, cellars and windowsills wherever the KnitWitches live and work.
| Core Thread | Memory |
| Found | The gardens and cellars of the ClothBorn Coven, Maud MendWell's yard, and anywhere KnitWitches sew |
| Known for | Catching raindrops for small creatures to drink |
A ThimbleStool is no taller than a fingertip. Its cap is silver-grey to brass-gold, covered in neat rows of tiny holes and dents, exactly like a thimble, and it grows upside down compared with any ordinary toadstool, with the open end facing the sky. They come up in tidy little rows, as though someone had set out a whole sewing box to dry.
ThimbleStools take their name from their shape. Every cap is a perfect little thimble, right down to the rows of tiny holes and dents that cover a real thimble from rim to tip, and they stand up from the ground like toadstools, which is what the "stool" is for. Threadlings who see one for the first time almost always try to put it on their finger.
When it rains, each ThimbleStool fills with a single raindrop, and holds it for days. Wrens, beetles, SpindleHops and other small creatures stop to drink from them, and it is said that Maud MendWell's companion wren, Weft, will not drink from anything else.
KnitWitches say that a ThimbleStool only grows where someone has sewn with care. Finding a row of them coming up in a new garden is taken as a sign that the house will be a happy one.
Near the Void, a ThimbleStool's holes and dents smooth over and its cap turns dull and grey, and it no longer holds the rain. Sewing a single careful stitch beside it is often enough to bring its shine back.
