PomPuffs

PomPuffs are round, woolly fungi that look exactly like the pompoms on the top of a knitted hat. They grow in bright clusters across Threadbare, and they are the favourite food of every Storyvore.

PomPuffs come in every colour a knitter could imagine: cherry red, mustard yellow, sky blue, and covered in spots and stripes all manner of other patterns. No two clusters are ever quite the same colour.
Tap a PomPuff, with your foot, or sit on it by accident, and it gives a soft puff...pom! and sends up a little cloud of bright and varied colour. These StorySpores drift away on the breeze like dandelion seeds, and wherever they land, a new PomPuff cluster will eventually grow. Get caught in that cloud, and you will find yourself transported to an entirely different world - inside a story. While you might feel like you've been in there for hours or even days, on some grand adventure solving puzzles, battling InkDrinkers, sneaking past Storyvores, or flying on a Woevern, Time back in Threadbare has barely moved at all. To passers by you will merely appear stand still a moment before coughing and moving on, when in fact, you will believe you've lived a heroes life and saved an entire world before breakfast. It is not uncommon for Patchlings on their way to school to purposefully kick a cluster or two.
Storyvores, always on the hunt for a story to devour, whether in a book, or on the lips of a storyteller, have an insatiable hunger for PomPuffs. Hunting them out and eating them is how most Storvores spend their time in Threadbare. Eat too many, and the Storyvores slip into a slumber that can last for days, reducing their threat to passing Threadlings, and even making them vulnerable. Most famously, Threadling of HemsHollow, Peg PomPocket stopped a Storyvore raid on the town library by tempting them into a cage filled with PomPuffs, the lowering them into the Void forever.
While PomPuffs and other fungi have not been observed in the Void, those found on the fraying edges of the world seem unaffected by its proximity. When the are finally taken however, their spores are released in a last act of rebellion and have been observed floating far into the Void and even rumoured to reach lands on the other side. One study at the University of the Unseen suggests that these floating fables can be captured in a jar and will remain active for thousands of years.

- Planting. PomPuffs can be planted and farmed.
- LoreQuests PomPuffs, when engaged in game will load the player in a short, unrelated SideQuest. Player remain in this quest until complete.
