MordantMaples are among the most useful trees in The Ink Well. Their bark makes colour hold fast to thread, and their smoke keeps the InkDrinkers away.

The MordantMaple takes its name from the dyer's word: a mordant is what makes a colour bite into thread and hold. Steeped into ink, its bark makes the colour hold fast for good, which is why the KnitWitches of the ClothBorn Coven, and every dyer in Threadbare, buy their colours from the InkKeepers.
Burned in the maple-smoke lanterns that hang along the punt routes of the Ink Well, the bark keeps the InkDrinkers away.
