GatherGrass

"One step is a note. A crowd is a choir."
-- A saying of the Song Sanctuaries

GatherGrass is the singing grass of The Song Sanctuaries. It trills at the touch of a footstep, so that every traveller who crosses a meadow there is accompanied, step by step, by a little song, and the more feet there are, the more voices it gathers.

Appearance

GatherGrass grows in soft, ruffled tufts, each blade gathered at the base like fabric drawn up on a gathering stitch. When a foot presses down, the gathers loosen and pull tight again, and the tuft trills.

Gathering Voices

A single traveller gets a single trilling voice. A family walking together gets a round. A whole festival crossing a meadow of GatherGrass gets a full chorus, every footstep gathered into the same song. The Attuned say you can tell how many friends are coming up the path long before you see them, just by counting the voices in the grass.

Much of what makes the Song Sanctuaries so improbably alive is the work of the SeedSingers, and GatherGrass is among their oldest and best-loved work.

GatherGrass and the Void

When the Void draws near, GatherGrass is among the first things to fall quiet. Its gathers slacken and lie flat, and a meadow that no longer answers a footstep is a sure sign that a grove is going silent. Walking through it together, and singing as you go, is said to help it find its voice again.

Gameplay Notes

  • Footstep audio. GatherGrass is a natural home for footstep sound effects in the Song Sanctuaries, layering voices as more characters walk through it.
  • Void warning. Silent patches of GatherGrass show where the Void is near.
